  • I have the M1 MBP and I'm running:

    1. Outlook
    2. Teams (chat & constant calls)
    3. Chrome (second teams instance)
    4. Powerpoint (multiple)
    5. Excel (multiple)
    6. Word
    7. Safari (forum + multiple other tabs)
    8. Slack
    9. Messages
    10. Sonos controller

    I have these across 4 desktops on a 49" 5120 x 1440 monitor.

    Everything is silky smooth.

  • It does look like a massive cost-cutting exercise. That stand and bezel look awful, they might bring out a black-bezel more expensive machine after...
This one will still sell loads though. But yeah, between this and the other recent releases, it's clear Ive has left the building.

  • Seconded - on a base M1 Air I have currently

    InDesign
    Illustrator
    Safari
    Spotify
    Calendar
    WhatsApp
    Pages

All on a 4K monitor. No issues ever.

  • Also done loads of 4K premiere editing - no trouble

  • the chin has the 'computer' bits vs the last gen where they were behind the display

  • I think it was MKBHD who suggested that they could have just made it 10mm thicker and it would still have been ridiculously thin and been able to house the speakers and PCB behind the display.

I think it would look better without the chin. Also a bit disappointing that the 'front' colours are muted version of the rear. Personally, I'd only really see the nice bright orange when I took it out the box and then never again.

  • Typing this whilst working from home on on my standard issue corporate Dell connected to my "ancient" 2009 27" iMac.

Still running smoothly on High Sierra, maxed out ram and an 840 pro SSD. Do have some smudging on the lcd which is a known issue. And do have an upgrade BT board in a box somewhere to activate continuity. Which reminds that I need to open it up for a cleaning session.

  • I am cap in hand, looking for help again. This time a bit more complex.

I will be working at a multiple day event, capturing video and then uploading a cut at the end of every day. Client/ IT wants us to be connected to the locations' internet via ethernet for upload speed/ stability. Happy days.

However, the editor I'm working with is bringing a 2019 MBP for editing, so no ethernet port. The client's IT dept. are requesting a physical MAC address for the Macbook so when we are connected, we're not picked up as a threat. However, the Macbook only seems to have a wireless MAC address, not a physical MAC address. Is the reason for no physical MAC address because of no ethernet port on the MBP?

Any idea on how to provide a physical MAC address from this gen MBP so we can log on via ethernet. We had planned to use a ethernet to USB-C adapter (as mentioned one page back).

Any help hugely appreciated if anyone has experience with this!

  • When you plug in an adapter, it gives you a MAC address for the ethernet adapter. I use the Anker one I linked to the other day and see this when connected:

  • So....what? I have broadly similar on a 2018 intel MBP.

The point is with this release they are not targeting people who need to do that (or heavy image processing stuff) - they are targeting people who want a computer to do communications and entertainment, hence the low(er) amount of RAM. That the M1 can do all that with a bigger screen and twice the RAM is kind of missing the point.

  • I thought this might be the case - we will test this tomorrow when the adapter lands.

    Thank you!

  • Cool.

My point was that the 8Gb of ram is not a barrier to running multiple CPU / ram hungry apps whilst outputting a shit tonne of pixels.

  • Ah cool, I missed that. I know there was some chat about the M1 needing less ram compared to the intel stuff to do the same job, but I thought that was largely debunked.

  • Does anybody know if the new iPad Pro has some wizardry with the camera which means you can use it in landscape for video meetings, without looking weird with an offset camera? I've the previous version iPad Pro and had to get a little portrait stand.

  • From what I've read its not debunked at all. The pro or semi pro reviews I've read everyone raves about the performance

  • I read a few articles where the technical reasons given were debunked. I guess there may be OS/software optimisation that wasn't taken into account though.

    Yes...

Additionally, an all-new Ultra Wide front camera enables Center Stage, a new feature that automatically keeps users perfectly framed for even more engaging video calls.

  • The reasons are logical, as well as the chinful front aspect being the iMac's trademark for the best part of two decades, but as others have said, it's a desktop machine, thin & light have little to no relevance here.

The chin on this new thing looks particularly incongruous without an Apple logo. Wasted opportunity to really push the design of an all-in-one desktop in my opinion, with the result looking gawky & Fisher Price.

  • Maybe they went a bit retro

  • Still have one of those Wall-E-looking things in the loft. The screen hinge assembly is a work of art.

  • I might upgrade my 11” iPad Pro to one of the new ones.

  • First Apple computer I've been excited about since the dome above. Man I loved that computer. Would very much like one but I simply don't need one when I already have a good laptop with a 27" monitor.

  • the result looking gawky & Fisher Price

    Do agree. They look shit.
It's like Big Sur is puking its rainbow guts out.
Designers must have lost control over their psilocybin micro dosages.

  • why the chin still

So you can get speakers facing directly forward by the looks of things.

edit, oh, and all the internals live there. All of them. Everything above is just screen.

I guess they thought the chin, and presumably the sound quality it makes viable - was preferable to a deeper chassis and no chin. Shrug.

That's great. It was a bit rubbish before. The 2020 Macbook Pro's camera isn't anywhere near as good as the 2020 iPad Pro's, but then the iPad Pro on landscape for video call was crap too.

I'd like the ability to use the iPad Pro as the camera in a video meeting, have the participants visible on the iPad Pro and be able to work between my laptop, for documents, screen share and notes etc. But, I think this might be a step too far. I think there's third party software which would sort of allow the use of the camera, but it would be great if it were native and both worked together a bit better, as I use the iPad Pro as a second screen a lot.
