  • Yes. But for that money, you might as well pick up something that has other ports or power delivery so you can charge etc

  • Makes sense - cheers!

  • I'd suggest getting something reasonably reputable. Cheapo ones often have issues when you try and use all of the ports (one of mine even disables the laptop keyboard somehow).

  • For a little bit extra, this is great.

  • .

  • 24"

If they brought out a 32", I'd probably consider swapping out the MBP for one. What's the point in a 24" desktop in 2021?

  • keeping the price down?

  • That's not really an Apple thing though, and even if it was, surely they could just release both.

  • That's not really an Apple thing though

Not per se, but I figure they do like to make these new iMacs the "desktops for everybody" and pull lots of people over to apple silicon - so I think it's the smart thing to do, offering an affordable option (you will get your "pro" option later : ).

  • They'll save the big'un for the M2, alongside the 16inch MacBook Pro.

Thought todays releases were pretty decent.

  • Agree with this. This is the iMac for the people. Roll on autumn and a 32" 6 or 8k iMac Pro in dark gray.

  • if the iMacs still supported target display i’m so sure they would sell so many more, especially in wfh time

    why apple why

  • Looks perfect to me. For people who aren't doing serious shit and don't have acres of desk space but need something that runs everything OK and looks good. Which is pretty much everyone.

  • but working from home! have a display to plug your work laptop into! it just seems so obvious

  • Cheers all for the recommends! A lot better than what I had singled out.

  • Indeed that seems obvious, though I get the idea that apple really pushes the approach of starting to work on something on one device and just continue seamlessly on another, as all the things are synced.
Having "more screen estate" with both the laptop and the imac on the desk is something only a few people appreciate / need I guess, but I agree it would be great to have the option!

  • yeah i get that, shame it doesnt work for most peoples work vs home devices, i cant just ‘work’ on a personal device

  • The screen looks great but I feel like there is just not enough RAM. 8GB is what I had in the Macbook
Air in 2012. Now with 16GB on a mini PC I just need to edit a few photos in Lightroom and the RAM is full, on the desktop 32GB is just enough to run lightroom and a bigger edit in Photoshop or an image stacker.
I feel like there is no point to the speed of the M1 if you can't run any apps that need that. At that price you probably would want to keep the machine for a couple of years but it's already underpowered now.

  • Anyone excited for the tags? Quite like the idea of 'find my bike'

  • New iMac looks bloody hideous with the chin (why the chin still?!), the white screen bezel and stupid curved-corners keyboard. Bring back Jonny Ive!

I hope that this toy version doesn’t end up sharing its design with the inevitable larger-screened ‘Pro’ edition.

  • Adventures with using an overheating 2020 Macbook Air (it's an i7) in a northeast-facing conservatory: I finally figured out how to use it in the morning hours where the sun cooks the conservatory and Google Meet cooks the CPU.

Get an ice pack from the freezer, use that underneath the laptop until noon until the sun is behind the building... The ice pack will be done by then, put it back in the freezer, repeat the next day.

  • Nah, ice pack is way cooler :)

I did think that the memory looked stingy. But I guess the litmus test for these models is can it run Email, Safari, Photos, Spotify or whatever & Calendar concurrently without grinding to a halt. They aren't workstations for image processing and they aren't targeted for people who need to do that. They are more 'iPads with keyboards and windowing' that run a bunch of apps that wouldn't be expected to consume the whole system in normal use.
