I think any bag that's designed to play nicely with a rack will probably be a sub-par backpack. Wald basket on the rack and a cargo net for securing backpack would get my vote.

Yeah, you're probably right and it might be the way I go but I'd rather not have a basket if possible as I still want to be able to use my ILE bag when not carting the kiddo about.

If you've got a wide platformed front rack (e.g. Pizza Rack) you might get away with just strapping it on directly with something like this
