  • Thanks man, I bit the bullet and for £24 bought a new automatic window opener.

Seems to be working well this weekend

  • Maybe brave, maybe stupid but I planted out some cucumbers today and sowed some runner and climbing French beans.

  • We left some squash seedlings out overnight a few days ago by accident and half of them aren't going to make it :/

  • I have a mini polytunnel over them, so I'm hoping that keeps the worst off

  • Removed the last of the Laurel hedge this afternoon - fair old amount of it. But I now have an extra 3 x 10m of garden which is south facing so lots of potential.
Gonna get someone in to chip it and grind the remaining stumps. I pulled two out by hand but it was too much hard graft for me.

  • Now I need to get someone to take those bastard rocks again too!

  • A street in Rome had palisade street furniture, was all bolted to the pavement was mint

  • How is that house on the right next to yours? It makes no sense...
Love the size of that garden, and the shed at the bottom, I'd love that much space.

  • That's exactly the kind of stuff I'm running through my shredder. All that lot would easily go in a single wheelie bin once shredded. £70 for a shredder if it saves you much compared to getting someone in.

  • Agreed I’ve got flowers to put out

  • Following on from earlier bamboo chat I'm pondering a stretch of bamboo plants to cover our ugly back fence. Would need to be about 4m wide and 2.5m tall and cope OK with the shade.

Seen a few places that sell bundles of plants for this purpose but they all tend to be about 1m tall. How quickly does bamboo grow, would we be waiting years for it to get tall enough, also how quickly would it fan out to cover horizontally? Cheers

  • we bought mature plants (shown above) to screen off W3.5m x H2m - cost us about 300£ (70£ plants down to 60£). planted in aug/sept 2020, and the first new shoots started coming through end-march and are already 30cm high. I think the shoots/culms grow to full height in one season maybe

not sure how long it will take to establish a hedge using the weedier plants we bought recently in a bundle

  • Do you not want the large rocks? I'd take them!

  • We had some Golden Bamboo in a pot and the second year a dirty great shoot shot up 7 feet easy.

  • You can have them! Would need to collect and be able to lift them (they are heavy!)

  • I'm not convinced by this bamboo chat. My brother spent 2 years getting rid of it from his back garden.

  • Yeah - planners obviously gave zero fucks for a long time. We get on with her and she's happy the huge fence has come down and given her some sunlight back!
We liked the garden when we bought it but I've gotten quite into it, there's still an awful lot to get done mind!

  • Thats good to know - we just had our green waste collected and the absolute legends who are our refuse team not only emptied the brown bin but also the two ton bags full of hedge. I think I can fit most of the rest of it into that again and hope they take that again in two weeks...

waiting for quotes, if its not too much considering I'd need to rent a stump grinder and shredder or just take a lot of my time I'll probably just go for it. There's two dead fruit trees that I could also get them to remove too.

  • I think planted and maintained properly it can work - you need to thin it right at ground level to keep it from bulking out. Failure to do so can lead to issues

  • It's definitely a balance. For me, it would probably have been at least 4 figures to clear all the shit I've got so the shredder and DIY option was a much more compelling option. If it was a few hundred, I would have thrown money at the problem.

  • Yeah for sure - you had a lot of manual clearing which is work I don't mind doing, you can chunk it up etc. whereas if say hire for stump grinder and chipper = £150 plus picking up and clean up and getting someone in costs c.£200 then would seem reasonable.

  • Cheers, much more useful than the webpage I was looking at. Think I'd be looking at clumping ones to minimise the risk of them taking over.

@cozey where did you buy the large ones from?
