Hey!
I had the same problem. The shifter was working intermittently and quite often not shifting at all; turns out many 4700 left shifter have this problem according to people on the internet. After trying to make it work for some time, ultimately my solution was replacing it... -

A better qualified mechanic!!
In factn my way to the lbs, it shifter properly without any issues. He recommended better cable outers though and just did a bit of tweaking and said I was very close to having it right
Hi all. I recently stripped down a bike with 105 and out a 4700 group set on it. Got shifters on here a few years ago and sat in spares box since.
Anywho, cabled up, new housing , dereailler aligned etc. All looks fine, cable tensioned and yet it keeps missing the first shift as though the shifter is not engaging at all.
The silver part of the shifter seems like it gets a little stuck when going from big to small and then takes two pushes to go from small to big.
However if I just hold the cable right in my hand, the shifting seems fine so it's something else in the set up and I can't figure it out whatsoever.
