Which Tyres?

  • Looking to replace my Conti 4 season for something a bit more supple and plush for the summer months, 700c 32-37mm clinchers.
They will mainly be used on tarmac but might see some light gravel as well.

Would Panaracer Paselas be what I´m looking for?
Pirelli Cinturato Velo seems also interesting, but quite similar to the Contis I already have.

  • Paselas aren’t the most supple tyre in the world but ime they do pretty well on the speed/puncture protection ratio. Not sure I’ve ever punctured one. Did the ADIH ride on the 32’s last weekend and they were fine on light gravel

  • I did a review on the Schwalbe all round tle 35 a few messages up.
    The Pirellis are well reviewed.
    Their price put me off,
the Made in France mention was very alluring.

I changed my rear tyre to a Hutchinson overide 38 last month.
Very easy to mount on a 22 external mavic rim with the cheapest pump from decathlon.
    A bit more supple, lighter,
but probably less p fairy proof.
    Used on snow ,
    cold and wet roads,
    paths,
    all good.
I still got the Made in France mention.

  • What's the go to fast(ish), puncture proof 28-30mm tubeless tyres? I gather they'll all make a dent on the wallet at 45-60 per, but something on the lower end of that scale would be easier to stomach.

  • Pirelli Cinturato Velo.

  • Is the S-Works Turbo all black tyre essentially the same as the S-Works Turbo Cotton gum wall?

Also, do we have a tyre swap thread?

  • No, the only black sidewalled Turbo Cotton is the TC Sagan Edition. The general S Works Turbo is only 120TPI whereas the Turbo Cotton is 320. Apparently the same compound and tread pattern but quite different tyres.

  • Thanks, didn't think gum wall would add that much of a premium!

  • The gum wall doesn't add a premium, the tpi (threads per inch) of the tyre carcass does. The higher the tpi is, the more supple the tyre will be, high tpi is normally lighter as well. Think the difference between coarse canvass and fine cotton.

  • Thanks (and had totally forgotten to check back - soz!). The Big Ben Plus looks like a good option, 23£ at wiggle so not too pricey.

  • I use big Ben plus, 26*2.1 and they're great, very pleased on and off road (no mud obviously!)

  • Attempting Lands End to John on Groats on my road bike in a few months. Need to buy new tires, max 28cc, that I can keep on the bike afterwards and enjoy for summer (read, no Schwalbe marathon)
Was planning on buying a new pair of GP5000's - is that very naive of me?

  • They're a bit Marmite, but I absolutely love them. Total PITA to fit, but once they're on, they're great.

  • 4 Seasons might be more sensible

  • "I can keep on the bike afterwards and enjoy for summer (read, no Schwalbe marathon)"

4seasons is not an enjoyable summer tyre.

  • Should mention that I've already got a pair of GP5000's that are about 6k old and still holding up - so i view them as a safe bet. My thinking is that if i'm going to spend c.£80 on new tyres, I don't want to get them just for the trip, and i'd like to try something new

  • I was looking for a set of those before I bought the GK+. Good luck!

  • Would 32mm tyres on 17mm internal rims be silly?

  • anything else would be downgrade

  • Vittoria Open Pave. £24 on Wiggle / CRC.

If you’re not tubeless I really liked these, had a few pairs in 32 and 28mm. Great looks, great rolling, easy to get on and off without tools (in my experience), not that I punctured too often on them.

  • I have conversely found that my GP 5000s wear much quicker than the 4000s and they've not got much left after 2000 miles.

I've got some Michelin Power Tubeless on my other bike and really rate them. Super easy to mount, quick, comfy and incredibly hard wearing they've done over 4000 miles and are barely worn.

  • I did LEJOG on Marathon Supremes, but my OH did it on 1x Marathon Supreme and 1x Durano Plus (28c). The DP is still going strong without a single flat after several thousand miles. That's what I'd probably go for if I wanted faster rolling than Supreme.

  • 1st ride on Pirelli P-Zero Race TLR yesterday, SO GOOD.

I have Cinturato VELO on talbot and they are amazing too!

I am a convert, I hate myself for leaving Schwalbe and I have general hate of all things Italian (except food) but these are good tyres.
