Also chain may be too long; how did you measure?
I did small to small, taking up slack in the chain till it tugged on the rear mech, maybe not enough tug?
For 1x, chainring to biggest cog plus 2x whole links (4x plates) has always worked for me.
The normal 2x/3x ‘+1 whole link’ method results in a very tight and noisy chain on the 42T cog.
