On device routing is not garmins forte, off device routing seems to be a lot better.
As a test I instructed the eTrex 32x unit to generate a simple route in Sheffield with just a start point (St. Columba Church, Crosspool) and an end point (St. Timothy's Parish Church, Crookes). The generated GPX file is attached. Walking the 2 km route this afternoon, the unit surprised me with two early warning tones about 2/3 of the way through the route along short footpath sections, but no other audible turn warnings along the road sections which formed the majority of the route.
In addition to the latitude and longitude coordinates and names of the two route points, the GPX file has some proprietary RoutePointExtension information after each point, but I have no idea what information they contain.
