Think I found the error. Basically the front gearbox was sluggish as I used some rubber spacers to keep the half shafts engaged with the diff.
Cut them down. A lot less friction now means it rolls alot better. I have also got a 12T coming to swap out if the 8T is too hot.

The drivetrain is a huge aspect. Didnt really consider before.
The boat running on 3S and watercooled gets v hot within minutes as water is like treacle at 50K rpm.
The C9 running 3S direct drive off the spur and topping 50mph does not even get warm.
The Firedragon running 2S 4wd offroad again gets v hot within minutes. The friction transfer on grass especially must be similar to the boat in water.
I guess if I got less grippy tyres it could spin up more, which would allow for cooler running / faster speeds. Will experiment.

Well tried all 3 unloaded and they work!
Gonna fit the 12T with some scrub tyres and give it a blast...

So to report back, the 12T is tasty.
Much more poke than the 17T and buggy looks the part to with it in.
Only thing is the Tamiya connectors get pretty hot...Gotta watch that.
Might put the 8T in the CLK DTM for le shit. Etc.
Can't be arsed to convert all the connectors over.
I wonder if there is a way of modding them to reduce resistance?

Well that escalated quickly.
After some online research it appears the Tamiya connectors are rolled metal which creates 'hot spots' or a tiny point of contact with massive resistance. To counter this I have inserted some brass sleeves which hopefully will allow a larger contact point. So less resistance. ๐

Just bought a TT-02B Plasma Edge II to have a play with. First car in 30 years. Guessing ball bearing set is the first hop up. Any other suggestions?

Yup, bearings, prop shaft, axles, turnbuckles in that order imo
They will make it sturdier and will help take any extra power in the long run

Hi, I just stumbled upon this thread - will have to go back to the first page and read it all :D
Last weekend I had such a blast playing with a mates 2010 Holiday Buggy (he had just upgraded it to a 540 motor) and it was so much fun - fast, but it also handled superbly (on loose gravel). Was doing donuts and drifts for ages. Massive smile factor!!
Since then I've been checking ebay/fb marketplace etc for Tamiya stuff. Could anybody recommend an off-road buggy? Maybe a Frog or Grasshopper or Holiday buggy/Sand viper?

2wd the old classics will be fun, but the sand viper/holiday buggy is a better chassis (DT-02). If you can find them the DT03 (fighter buggy etc) are great value for money.
4wd the world is your oyster at the mo, any of them will be fun, but the TT-02B has the lowest ride height as itโs based on a touring car. Good value though.

I have a dt03 and can confirm it is a hoot.
Just make sure you get ball races for it as a minimum.
(My set came with oil filled dampers and a tuned 540 (sport or torque, can't remember which)) -

For me, it's the look of the Holiday Buggy/Frog/Grasshopper - fickle eh LOL! I don't necessarily want to beat my mate in a race or anything - more just rag about and have a laugh every now and then. So maybe a Frog (for some variation) to his HB :)

Can confirm that a Frog/Grasshopper/Hornet with a motor slightly too powerful for the chassis is an absolute hoot!

I found a video where a guy was incrementally adding bits to a Grasshopper (I) - and thus making it 'almost' a Hornet. He was doing laps of a circuit each time and comparing to the Hornet, but when he added the 540 motor the Grasshopper was almost undriveable :) I think either a Frog or Sand Viper (which both 540 motors as standard) would offer a good challenge to my mates Holiday Buggy :)
I do LOVE Sand Scorchers - but they are just way too expensive (and don't handle that well either so I've seen)
That was the brushless unsensored stuff though. All the Absima / Gool stuff are these upsized 380s, hence they run quite hot.
Not sure you could put a 380 rotor in a 540 brushed can though.
Can you dick around with the timing or open it up to have a look?
Bitd a 17t double would have been viewed as a bit pedestrian...but who made it seemed to have a lot to do with how quick it would be.
