Pleased with the progress on this today. I spent a couple of hours making sure the stem adapter fitted snugly and am very pleased with the way it looks. It's much less intrusive, more subtle, than most. I'm thinking of changing the headset for a Seiki in black, so will possibly spray the adaptor so it's fits in.

What wheels will you use for this bike?
-
• #54
This needs a silver stem and seatpost imo

This seems to be all I'm hearing ATM. Whilst I totally appreciate people's views, and that that will be the the widely held view, it would be nice if there was discussion on other parts od the build as well!

I'm building some with kinlin 31ts, record hubs and sapim spokes.

Ok, will be nice wheels I think. I think all black is a great choice, but that's just an opinion. Pink tape can look spot-on or competely off. There's nothing in between. If I were you, I would make this decision when all parts are installed, will give you a much better image of the complete bike.
On the stem: tidy solution in my opinion. As long as there are no spacers involved and the angle of the stem is in line with the toptube, it looks fine and wider range of ahead possibilties > looks. I'm building up a Master where I'll be using a threadless 1" headset (Tange Seiki) in combination with an ahead adapter. Might be an option for you to, but I presume that you'll need to cut your steerer tube than which would be a no-go. -

White tape, white saddle. Always looks classy.

Yeah I agree about the pink. I think I'm pleased with it but as you say it's hard to tell until the whole thing is built up. The idea would be to use pink brake cables to carry the theme through to the back, and then pink pulley wheels on the super record derailleur to finish it off. Otherwise it would look a bit front heavy.
Thanks for appreciating the fit on the stem adaptor, I thought it looked agap! Not happy with the bulky headset as stated previously.
Could you explain your point re threadless adaptor in more details? Sounds interesting.I wanted a black saddle and seatpost but knew I wanted those specific ones and could only get them in the colours they are in. Tempted to polish the post and stain the saddle. Can't decide as the white goes with the seat tube but not necessarily with the bars etc.

I think the saddle-seatpost combo in the last picture looks great and should be kept as is. Is it a ti seatpost? The bars are fine but I also think white tape is the way to go. And with one of the Zipp service course silver stems it would bang. They're good value and look a bit vintage.
The pink just seems a risky route to be taking, especially as it's also going to be jockey wheels and cable housing... -

Yeah fair enough. Its a ti by USE, really nice and I love the seat clamp design. I know what you mean about the silver/white or pink. It feels like its either embrace all the chrome and add as much more as possible or reduce the effect of the chrome slightly by going with another colour. In the flesh I feel like more chrome/silver would be a bit much, especially as I'm going with modern black components. As I say I feel like the flamboyance of the pink goes well with the character of Tommasini. Ultimately I love this frame https://www.flickr.com/photos/theprimela/13556013843 but have never seen another in that colour come up.

Pink goes with blue quite well IMO and used Benotto tape myself previously.
I think you should leave the colour at the handlebars though,It will be next to impossible to colour match the tape to cable's and jockey wheel's.

Gorgeous bit of kit. Yeah you're right it is hard to get the same shade. I'd love some chris king punch but that's never going to happen. Spray.bike fluro pink is the right colour but not sure what components wouldn't scratch if sprayed.

Pink cables, pulley wheels and tape sound like a risk, but you never know how it turns out :).
See attached picture of how I did the threadless stem/ahead. Teflon tape on the threaded part. Downside: no room for preload adjustement of the headset, so setting it up is a bit fiddly (removed wheel, than a clamp on top of stem/fork crown). Worked fine for +/- 300 km with no play or issues so far.

A more subtle shade of pink could make a match easier https://www.probikekit.co.uk/handlebar-spares-acc/deda-handlebar-tape/10769925.html

True. BLB do this which seems to be pretty good to me. https://www.bricklanebikes.co.uk/blb-brake-cable-outer-housing-hot-pink

Yeah that's super slick. Is that two shims basically? Love the wheels too. I wanted some deeper rims but couldn't afford them right now. I love the small tubes big wheels look, however its always a tossup between finances and desire; one is high the other is low!

decisions.... decided to go for the tange seiki in satin instead of black as I'm not sure how the bottom crown would look with the chrome fork if it was black but just noticed CycleClinic is out of the satin.

bicyclist.cc have the Passage in satin. I have one, it works.
-
• #70
CC have that too which is good, I presume the only difference is the caged v sealed bearings. Cheers

:)
It's a steer extender which has been cut off to the correct length. Than there is a shim that is placed over de extender so a ahead stem can be mounted.

Nice. I'll stick with this for now but it's definitely something for the future. I know it isn't necessary but I'd like to change the bolt in the adaptor for a titanium one of the same size. I'm interested in balancing out the extra weight of the f+f if I can and tbh the cheap bolt is horrifically heavy.
-
• #73
This is kind of genius.
I'm not sure I understand how it works, but it looks good.
-
• #74
Does the shim have a split in it somewhere? Just looks like a tube from the photos
-
• #75
Yes, shim is of course splitted, otherwise stem wouldn't clamp.

I want to go with more bright pink to complement the blue, and also feel it fits with the character of tommasini bikes. Some folks weren't too sure it would work
