It's somehow been six months since we moved in and in that time we have:
- Ripped up the carpets
- Had whole house re-wired (guy missed like 4 outlets)
- Nothing else, we still haven't even unpacked any boxes
The anniversary prompted a sudden flurry of activity and we paid a plasterer to patch up after the electrician. He did an amazingly shit job and the walls now have all sorts of intriguing curves and bulges. Thought about quibbling but too English, so just paid and then painted over it in a zesty green which actually does distract very well from the artisan texturing.
Bolstered by my painting success, I am now firmly back on the home renovation train. Our house has no hallway, and not only does the front door open into the living room, it also opens directly onto the stairs. Does anyone else have this set-up? I need #designinspiration.

I'm simply going to point out that reasonable skill and care has not been taken in the work and I expect a reskim(?) and skirting etc refitted at no extra cost. I'll be withholding 10% of contract price until then. No issues there, right? Would a reskim (by a different plasterer...) be helpful at all?

My gf and I are in the process of buying a flat in Peckham. We had a relative who is a surveyor look at it recently for his opinion.
He advised against buying it and he said his primary reason for doing so is because there is housing association flats next door and that this could make it difficult to sell in the future/neighbours could be difficult.
It’s not something we’d even considered or thought would be a problem. The most we’d noticed was that the communal garden for the HA flats is a bit untidy, but tbh it didn’t bother us.
Is my relative right that HA flats as neighbours would put off future buyers or is he just being a bit of a snob?

Sadly, he's not wrong. We're struggling to sell ours at the moment for vaguely similar reasons.

It depends on the flats, the residents, and the HA.
I lived in a HA block for 19 years and all but one (a renter) of my neighbours over that time were lovely. If they are shared ownership then the residents will probably take some pride in the place. If it's all rented there are no guarantees.
HAs are only interested in building and selling flats, not in being decent landlords or doing maintenance, so that probably explains the communal garden.
As for the flats themselves, if the place you're looking at is noticeably nicer than the HA block then it may become a target of crime. We had this in Bethnal Green for the first few years until the next new thing was built, and our friends in Canning Town had a real problem as they had bought in a new build block in the middle of a 50s council estate, and people got mugged or robbed all the time apparently. -

@brockwell_local Bristol not London but I put an offer at pretty much asking price on this (https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property/79075989) which was 2 doors down from these flats. Flats looked well maintained but would rather not have them there, mainly due to parking or if they got converted into student flats. House went 30k plus over asking had a shit load of offers

^ used to live in an ex council flat in Sheffield and had the odd ped ride past the front door in the early hours (was 20m back from the road), worlds apart from the these flats which looked nice

Nope, they do not appear to have undertaken intrusive works as part of the survey. Seems wild to me, as there could be all manner of nasties hiding under the floor.
I feel I called this one correctly and offered appropriately with the right allowance for independent surveys. I still offered substantially over the mortgage valuation.
Unfortunately the closing date has just passed and I have found myself outbid by a massive margin. Oh well - someone else's concern now. I'm sad that I won't be able to take on the task of repairing and caring for this particular historic building.
