• Nice tyres, cool light, great video.

  • Very cool! The black tyres look really good, and the light looks neat!

  • This build is so good.
    Keep the updates coming

  • This is turning out so well!

  • Thanks for the good vibes, everyone! This is really a fun project and I am happy it is coming together so well.

Another thing I am working on is restoring some pedals. I got a pair of the Cube All Mountain Pedals (mentioned here ) for twenty quid of eBay. They are a bit run down so I took them apart, cleaned the bearings and ordered new pins.
One of them was completely stuck, rounded inside and out. I tried pipe pliers and in the end even cutting it from the top to use a screwdriver but without success. Everything was slipping off. just couldn't get a good grip.
Luckily I had to go into work yesterday and our new neighbours are a coworking / make space with a proper workshop. We tried drilling the pin out but in the end, managed to make my cut bigger and use a more massive screwdriver to get the damn thing out.

Now all that is left is polishing and putting everything back together. Hopefully, I'll find some time for this at the weekend.

  • Looks like they're going to polish up well nice!

  • This just keeps on getting better

  • You're restoring and improving old stuff as well - excellent.

  • Yes! I was actually hoping to use more old stuff but couldn't find nice old components in every case.
That being said there is still a noticeable amount of used or at least 2nd hand parts on this bike.

    1. Saddle
    2. Cassette
    3. Pedals
    4. Front Derailleur
    5. Rear Derailleur
    6. Front Light
    7. The Frame obviously

So I think it is a good mixture of old and new.

  • A bit late, but this is an awesome project! sub'd

  • Don't worry. This isn't done yet ;).

  • It's been a while.
The pedals are done and I love them. Best grip I ever had on a flat pedal (to be fair I never owned a pair with replaceable pins).

The front tyre was finally replaced by one without a wobble but I was a bit unlucky with some other components too. The front chainring bend on a slow ride through Epping and had to be replaced. Thankfully that was less of a hassle than getting the replacement tyre.

I also realised I am not quite happy with the cockpit. I want something a bit more classy and slightly shorter reach. Going through my options I decided to try a shorter Nitto Technomic stem and some Nitto B135 AA Rando Bars. I always like their look but was put off by their limited width. I decided to give the widest 45 cm version a go but due to an error got the 42mm version delivered...
45 seems to be sold out everywhere.

But due to my latest misfortune, I am not in a hurry. I was pushed off my bike by a car taking an abrupt left turn into the bike lane and smashed my left wrist. No riding or building bikes for a few weeks.

  • sorry to hear about your crash, that's horrible.

pedals do be looking lovely on the brighter side of things

  • Fuck, hope the wrist isn't too bad and you got the driver's details.

    Heal up soon!

  • Koma light challenge! (Bit long)

I am off work so this at least gives me time to think about a new paint job.
My original idea was a really dark metallic purple. So dark it almost looks black and cream/beige as an accent for the headtube. So my palette is pretty much this :D

But this isn't set in stone. I do think I want a metallic / gloss finish and a contrasting headtube but there are other colours I like.
Like this midnight pearl blue and some others from Mercians colour palette

Or some of the Rivendell paint jobs.

  • Or to post another one of Tom / fomtaz bikes:

  • Sorry to hear about your crash, hope you won't miss too much of the good weather!
Accent headtube will be great on this bike!

  • re paint: do it now whilst you cant ride!

Can I propse some of the orignal raleigh royal colours

I miss mine from time to time and some times almost convince myself to buy another

  • Haha Yeah, I'd love to do it now. The problem is I am still not allowed to put full pressure on both my wrists and I've lost a lot of strength so I can't take it apart.

  • I put some thoughts into this and I think I'll go for RAL 5004 Black Blue for frame and forks and RAL 9001 Cream for the headtube and decals if possible.
I spoke to Mario Vaz on the phone and he said he got some Raleigh Royal decals available but I don't really dig the original ones. I also feel like it's not really a Raleigh Royal anymore with the changes I've made. So I am thinking of giving it a madeup model name.
With the wider 650b wheels I see this more as tow or forrest path randonneur. One name I've been toying around with is Raleigh Hinterland [1][2][3]. It's a German word that has been introduced into some languages like English, French and Spannish (?) and means something like back country or rural (coast) area away from the city.
Mario said custom cut vinyl decals are also possible so I played around a bit with different fonts.
