I've just bought a Pacer from exactly the same year (it's in the post) and have to admit I may unashamedly steal one or two ideas from this build ;)
I think we both had the same idea independently about the pink Gravel Kings however! Kinda want to try the purple/violet ones too.
Out of interest, what are the biggest tyres you think it can manage? Assuming 38s are fine but not sure if there's room after that?

Sick! Where'd you find it? Really looking forward to seeing the build.
I actually have a new, unused set of purple GKs here that I bought for the same reason, if you wanted them...
Slick 38s are fine. There's probs clearance for 40-42mm at the fork to be honest, but the chainstays are pretty tight. I had some 35mm GravelKing SKs (the knobbly ones) on there for a while and, clearance at the chainstays was pretty minimal to be honest.
There's someone on instagram who claims to have got 42mm tyres in, but he's lying / has narrow rims / hasn't measured actual inflated width.

yes yes yes

Cheers dude :) was kinda hoping I could manage 38 SKs but I guess we'll have to see.
Ended up messaging an eBay seller in Berlin after I missed out on a different Pacer on the off-chance it fell through. Turns out he has/had a bunch of Kuwaharas and ended up selling me a slightly nicer one, which was pretty good.
What size/profile are those tyres? Might be interested but I'm finding myself leaning towards the pink as well.
Yeah, I'll probably have to do a build thread, finally! Just noticed it takes a 27.0 post so that's messed up one plan already. On the plus side, this one does have the original stem so hopefully that's not some annoyingly narrow clamp size (hoping to get 25.4/26mm bars in). Should be fun...

Nice paintwork ! Pink bits :)

Amazing. Stoked for you that it came through!
38mm SK on the front will be fine, 100%. For me, a 35mm SK on the rear meant I had to cut off all the little injection moulding hairy bits on the tyre to stop them rubbing the stays.
The ones I have here spare are 35mm slick purple. No worries if they're not what you're after - just on the off chance. Pink will look sick.
Excited to see it come together.

This is really useful info, thanks - most likely going to run archetypes too (black this time around) at least initially as I have a wheelset knocking around, so your measurements are pretty helpful :)
I've just realised that Panaracer do two different purplish colours and I am apparently after the impressive sounding 'Pansy' from the same release as the pink. So apologies for being a doofus and thanks for the offer anyway. Will probably get a set of each in true #buyer spirit!
Second child arriving literally any day now so it may be a bit slow coming, but watch this space ;)

Signed up to lfgss to thank letog for his inspiring post on da Pacer. Hello.
Bike looks great after all your hard work. Particularly interested in how you handled the brake upgrade with the XT V-types.
I have a 1989 version of same, pre (nicer) splatter paint but with the pink stem. I believe, subject to a new chain, it's in original condition, on its first IRC "cross country" 35c tyres on black anodised UKAI rims, and seemingly pre lx/dx branding deore drive drain. I'll get some photos up if anyone's interested. I acquired bike from my brother (too big a frame for him at 22") after he'd bought on auction site for c. £80 a couple of years back, to replace same model he'd bought new in 1989 for c. £400 which got pinched. Why aren't there more of these things about...or the more MTB Sierras and so on , in UK? It's certainly the most comfortable bike i've ever owned, the frame flex and riding position on the original bar width just right for me. I don't mind the Biopace rings either but likely not fit enough to really notice. The only bit i haven't tried to move yet is the quill stem just hoping it hasn't seized up. Cheers, John

Thanks for your kind words.
The V's were just a practical thing for me, to be honest. I think a nice set of cantis would suit the bike better visually, but it stops really well this way and was quick and simple to dial in.
Would definitely be keen to see some pics!

Sure..it's an early 56cm pacer...frame stamp is 88 04... If anyone would like to see any specific shots let me know...and a way of removing that yellow reflecting tape...defied any solvents I have...

If it's definitely tape, try gently warming it with a hairdryer, it usually works on stubborn frame decals.

Nice bike

Thanks...sorted with wife's hair dryer and an old plastic bank card as a scraper... paint underneath survived too. A closer look at tyres though...walls are going bulging.... reluctant to see them off as on from factory...I have a pair of land cruisers as interim...any suggestions to anything else close to IRC originals.. similar pattern?

Good stuff, glad it worked.

The Pacer I have coming (currently in international shipping purgatory) has the original IRC 700x35 tyres which seem to be a in pretty good nick. Shall I take a look when it arrives and let you know? I'm not planning to use them myself

Changed a few bits. Little bit more teal. Ditched the green tyres. Lots more scuffs.
