I think my modern record headset has them both but I got it a while ago so can't confirm. I'm sure it's just to keep dirt and a bit of water out but if you maintain it regularly it should be ok.
Edit: If you have to pay postage for the 1 anyways, if you can stretch to it, you may aswell get the top one too. Edit 2 (if it is a chorus HS)

I just checked my record and it has a crown race that covers the whole bearings so I can't see if it has the bottom seal.
Does the cup have anything to tell what headset it is?

I'm also missing the same seal, but on a 90s Athena headset.
Which headset is yours exactly? I'd be interested to know if that part works.

That Record above may or may not fit, this is the intended seal for your headset.

This one is mine, different from the one from cycle clinics.

So that Athena is the same setup as my vintage Record? Interesting...

Yeah let's see if we can find the correct parts for it. The one I posted is the newer models.

I'm looking for a slimline headset eventually, want to reduce the stack on the bike. Anything out there that does the job? I've got a more modern campag headset but its only a few mm shorter.

It's not, the one sold by blb is also Athena. You can tell by the finishing quality and form factor.
The At-005 seal sold by Mercian will fit your Athena headset. -

Tange Falcon is pretty low stack at 35mm. Also it's the lightest I can find for sale.

so the one on my bike is record or athena? how can you tell the difference?
-
• #3365
Good call, I had a tange falcon for a bit. Great headset and not expensive. Looks good and good build quality.

If you scroll down this thread it identifies yours as an athena. @Jw89
Edit:I didnt read properly. It's either a chorus or an athena. Not a c-record, sorry! Maybe someone can confirm if the cups are identical on athena and records from that era.

It's Athena.
how can you tell the difference?
Had both of them to compare. :)
Record is finished to a higher standard (high polish) than Athena, which is rougher and anodized.
The details are also different.
You can look up old catalogues or Boxed NOS headsets for comparison. -

Get yourself a quill stem...

lol, we did this last year.

Cheers.
Not feeling so precious about it now, might try and get something less... bulky.
-
• #3371
So which one is this then?

Ha! Still true today.

The truth doesn't change! I know all the arguments, and I agree with them. But i wanted to go for flat bars and a modern set up and didn't have the cash for another set of bars in 26mm. I looked at the factory 5 titan but didn't have the money for that. Perhaps in the future I'll change. Another thing was I wanted the stem as flat as possible. The x2 is pretty slim and the right angle. But I don't need to explain myself.... I fully back myself and know my own mind. No doubts here.. nono.

Any advice on which 10 speed campag compatible cassette to go for? I'm tempted to go with the veloce or miche primato from somewhere like cycle clinic for now then save up for something better.
At 4 quid its worth a pop... cheers. Weird thing is the diagram states the same seal is in the top set but there's nothing there either and that's all fine.
