• Looking for a new bike for my 5'2" partner. She has a lovely 80s steel Raleigh mixte but is after something a bit more suitable for touring and general longer rides outside London.

Aiming for something along the lines of a 90s MTB/hybrid (wide gear range, plenty of options for racks and mudguards, upright position, clearance for larger tyres) but crucially not weighing a ton. Low budget as it'll likely be used for commuting too so will be locked up outside stations etc. Any help gratefully received as we're not having much joy finding anything decent in her size on eBay/gumtree.

Fixer-uppers welcomed as it'll give me something to do besides tinkering with my own bikes

  • Cheers yeah I saw that too. The missing front canti mount put me off though as I wouldn't really know where to start with that kind of repair. Pretty much spot on otherwise though

  • 49cm (I think) Galaxy, if she wanted to go more classic tourer?

Drop bars, cantis, downtube shifters, mudguards and rear rack. Rideable as is, but I wouldn't trust the tyres: eminently fix-upable especially if you got hold of some cheap STIs. £140ish, SE7.

  • That could be just the ticket! Would you mind PMing me some pics I can show to her?

  • Not sure if this is what you're after but I offered up my mums old Giant Expression the other day, https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/362079/#comment15919276 it's not insanely heavy but weight could be trimmed obviously. Mum is 5ft on a good day and now 70 but rode this almost daily (we did a 26 mile jaunt in 2019 when I was up visiting) until I bought her a new bike last summer as her xmas pressie.
We're in Letchworth Garden City so a bit of trek, I'll probably not get round to sorting it myself til end of summer as it's very low down on the list of priorities atm.

  • Ah cheers, but yeah it's not quite what she's looking for, probably too similar to the bike that she sold when she got her mixte. Thanks for the offer though (and kudos to your mum for riding 26 miles! Trying to convince my mum to keep up with cycling on her very similar giant)

I thought I had some on Flickr from a little while ago, but looks like I've deleted them. I'll take some more tomorrow unless it's pissing down ...

  • That would be much appreciated, cheers!

  • Picked up a bike yesterday that should do the job so this is no longer needed. Thanks all for the replies
