LFGSS Camper Van owners?

  • I want to buy an unconverted van, prices are up there it seems too

  • I'm daydreaming about a project but having searched a few caravans in my time I know that damp is an issue. Has anybody fitted a dehumidifier in a van and did it work, was it quiet etc?

  • For storage or when you use it? We open a few bottom and top vents and stick a radiator in our caravan thing over winter and it keeps it dry.

  • I CNC kitchens for a firm who do transporter conversions, they are buying new vans rather than the usual 3 year old ones as the prices are so high at the moment it doesn't make any sense.

  • I'm thinking whilst in use. I can imagine two people breathing will produce a lot of moisture.

  • I'd been planning to buy a camper this year, but will probably hold off until next year when inevitably they will all be back on the market cheaper.

  • Proper ventilation and a heater on cold days will also solve this

  • My van is slowly becoming more cosy! Installed the ceiling and made a small cabinet from leftover wood from the 'kitchen counter top' and now have to start making more cabinets

  • very nice! I f***ing HATE those canister stoves though, I've had two catch fire on me, please be careful indoor cooking with it

  • also where are your rear windows? Gas cooking without ventilation is not a good idea

  • Thanks! The rear windows are covered in that last pic. I installed a 12v roof fan, I leave it always open and it's on when I'm cooking. I probably get a nicer stove in the future but this works for now

  • Very very tentatively considering getting a Ford Transit Connect or VW Caddy or Citroën Berlingo or AN Other to do a micro camper conversion with.

Has anyone got any thoughts as to which makes the best van for conversion?

  • That's a very broad question. Any particular requirements? Budget? Size? Van vs MPV? etc.

  • Van probably, sleep 2. Budget £5-10K ish

Have had VW type 2 Bay and a T4 before so swayed towards Caddy, but see the Transit Connect is quite popular too

  • Caddy will probably hold it’s value better. But if it’s a ‘van for life’ no reason not to get a connect. My brother has a connect with windows (called a Tourneo) and absolutely loves it.

  • Ice cream van with blacked out windows? The owner now at Her Majesty's Pleasure?

Defo need a respray or you'll never get a good night's sleep when you park up.

  • Ha! Amazing. Would leave paint as is!

  • my brother converted a Connect. still loves it - and practically lived in it pre Covid.

he made mistake of incorporating space to store is Surly LHT inside at first but it is too small for bike too. he has reconfigured. and ultimately looking to move on to a bigger van.

he has loved it though. can probably dig out some pictures if interested.

i cannot comment on that v Caddy or Berlingo. but no VW scene tax thats for sure

  • Van overheating a bit on way to work other day, turned out to be the bimetallic fan switch. Fans now working like a champ. Temp and fuel gauges do go up and down like a yo-yo anyway due to a dry joint somewhere in the dash. Apparently that’s a bit hectic as you have to dismantle the dash so will book it in for that. Some days they work fine, others intermittent, others nothing. If you put the heater on full blast the dash gets really hot and all the gauges and dash lights work much better.

  • The most important part of my van:)

  • I'm in the process of converting a Ford Transit Custom L1H2 for a friend and I've started a new build blog on Instagram. Check it out here:

Looking to turn converting vans into a business over the summer so if anyone needs any assistance, give me a shout!

  • Looks tidy! Are you going to get the CAD designs CNC cut, or build it yourself?

Loving the little tool drawers unit that came with it.

  • Going to make it all myself. It's mostly made from frames rather than ply sheets (lighter and cheaper but harder to keep everything straight!) so not really CNC suitable
