• I am toying with the idea of swapping my estate for a van. Am I mad?
The main draw is to be able to have a large vehicle when over in France (once that's possible again) to furnish/diy around our holiday home.
Will insurance and road tax be crippling? I know about ULEZ extension and don't really plan to drive too much into the forbidden area.
Currently paying about £110 a month combined for insurance and tax.

  • There are definitely some compromises. For ours, insurance was cheaper than our Ford Fiesta by some margin, road tax was more though which balanced it out.

Keep in mind that vans are limited to 60 on dual carriageways and motorways in the uk. Fixed speed cameras won’t get you but mobile speed traps and average speed checks will. You used to be able to get round this with camper conversions but they have pretty much closed this route now.

Otherwise, they are just a bit more agricultural to drive. Not necessarily a bad thing, but different to the comfort of a car. Nothing beats being able to sling all your stuff in a van though.

  • Thanks. It hadn't occurred to me that vans had lower speed limits on the faster roads. Good to know.
I have driven a van before and quite enjoy it tbh. I do like being that feeling of being higher than regular cars. That's part of the appeal a little bit as far as I'm concerned.
