Nothing adheres particularly well to ABS...It’ll chip off at all the contact points

Second point I'll give you, but it's perfectly possible to put a good paint job on ABS, and one or two of my second hand Duplo bricks have no-prep rattle can overspray on them which is proving extremely durable 🤨

Come to think of it, maybe I’m mixing my plastics up. Doesn’t ABS go a bit soft and stinky when something like cellulose goes on it? I’m thinking styrene kinda stink.

I'd have to ask a chemist, and he's probably asleep. As with any plastic, you need to choose a compatible paint.
