Does anyone know anything about gardening?

  • Woke up this morning to most of it on the lawn - doesn’t last long does it!

  • Has anyone used a shredder/chipper like this before?

I've got a lot of tree, creeper and bush to get rid of and it's going to be a lot easier to get in the car if it's shredded.

My concern about this one is that it looks like it will just splurt the chips out all over the garden - is there some way of directing its fire?

  • Found a 10kg tub of fertiliser, several years old. It's Westland Growmore - balanced NPK granules, chemical-based. We generally aren't using chemicals in the garden and trying to keep it fairly wildlife friendly, so not sure if we should use this, or try to freecycle it (initial thoughts are not to use it). However - could it be useful? We have been growing veggies for a few years, no major input of externally sourced manure or other conditioners, only a bit of compost (both bought and home-made). Have only just discovered the joys of mulch (bark and straw) which has been a bit of a revelation.
Does fertiliser go 'off'? It's probably around 10 years old, maybe more.
Is it related to the WWII "National Growmore" fertiliser?

  • Get hold of an empty ton bag from any building site, the stream of chippings is easily aimed. Never feed wet foliage, don't try to ram too much into it, they clog up!

  • I personally would aim the shredder so the contents go into a bin then bag up from it
    or as mentioned above

  • Thank you - I'll see if I can find a ton bag tomorrow.

  • I think we've settled on a Brandywine Vibernum

Lots of seasonal changes and berries in the winter.

  • As long as it's been kept dry it's probably fine. Whether you want to use it is up to you really. Clearly it won't help any aim you may have to be organic.
I'm sure you could palm it off to some allotment old timer if you didn't want to use it.
We have some chicken manure pellets which came with the house. It's a big tub and 6 years on we're still scattering them around.

  • chicken manure pellets

There's a tub of that as well. Maybe I'll just keep that to use and try and give away the fertiliser. Aside from supporting a systemically unsustainable industry what are the cons of actually using chemical fertiliser on your own patch? We're not near any water-courses so not much risk of it washing out.

  • Ah mate, already?!

We inherited a peony that does an incredible build up to blossom but it’s over in a week, such an anti-climax.

  • I doubt there's any real problem with using it. Just be wary of overfeeding things so they produce loads of foliage and no flowers/fruit etc.

  • No use to you direct, but I found one whilst out on my bike yesterday. Keep a look out & carry some bungees maybe?

  • Went up to gardening club in Enfield today - wow its a lot cheaper than garden centres near me. Also made a start on the Laurel bush. Solid BH weekend of garden prepping

  • You should also check out the Clockhouse Nursery if you're up this way. Also book a visit to Myddleton House (booking only needed because of the virus)

  • my bamboo has started sprouting. yaldi

  • gimme that thicc thicc privacy hedge pls bamboo lads

  • Oh nice, yeah Myddleton looks nice. Might make a trip up one weekend for some inspo.

Basically waiting for the border to get like this...

  • Toolstation, £8.54. I have two arriving today to put my shreddings into as the croydon bi-weekly garden waste collection doesn't keep up with my current rate of clearing. Already have two full ton bags.

  • Our fremontodendron has had its feet in the ground for six months now and looks a damn sight happier for it. Although I may have to re-evaluate my plans to train it up the house unless it has a teenage growth spurt, they’ve only got a 15 year lifespan :s

  • What do you call those wires ?

  • Not sure, trellis wire? I think the tensioners are expensive in garden centres so I may have got those at screwfix instead...

  • Look up sail shade fixings on eBay, about a fiver. Then connect with a roll of picture wire?
