The circlip in my kit (not minimod, and I've yet to fit it) is thinner that the standard one. Whichever way you do it, you've got to get properly medieval on the circlip's donkey with a large screwdriver for leverage. FYI in the interest of doing this job, I have acquired a large number of broad ranging types of circlip pliers. None of which are up to the job. BFO screwdriver is king.
Perhaps you need to remove the plastic spoke guard to make room for the third sprocket?
