• @hugo7 here's real world advice on this subject:

    The kids seats will take up the whole row no doubt. Adults can sit in the middle if they have the right personality (patience of a rock) and body type (stick). This is speaking from experience. My wife can do it for 8 hours. I can barely make it to the grocery store.

    Double check that the car you rent can actually accept kids seats in the THIRD row legally and safely, overwise the adults will be sitting in the third row. For example, our VW Tiguan is a "7 seater", but it doesn't accept car seats in the back row, so adults have to squish in to the back row with their chin on their knees.

    I have put car seats back there, but not very safely and it's a giant pain in the ass to buckle them in.

    in other words, full size SUV is the way to go unless you want wing it and save money
