How about a line between the mersey and the humber? Means Manchester is north but Doncaster is in the South... happy enough with that.

The area run by the vikings, The Danelaw, ran from the Wirral to the Wash.
We could have become part of Scandinavia in 1066 and have a Nordic culture

Drinking, robbery, short life span frequently ending in violence. Seems like viking culture was alive and well in Hull when I grew up.
