  • Ah yeah I’ve only been adjusting the weight to use the coffee up. I’m starting at the same weight each time. I’m using the grinder at work but I’m not in every day, so I’ve been grinding 3-4 days worth at a time. No point wasting it if it’s close enough that I can adjust the weight a bit and get a shot even if it’s less than ideal. Everything else gets thrown in the FrankenAeropress jar.

  • I have one and it's ok but the proprietary filters are A Pain.

Also I'm not as convinced as he is by the design of it. Find the three pieces quite annoying and they don't really mesh with each other as well as I would like.

Some time I'll do a big order of the filters and really spend some time with it.

  • Well my carbon dump tube on my Classic didn't fully go to plan. It's a tiny bit oversize so it doesn't push all the way home. I also slash cut the end at a sharp angle. It looks cool, but it slightly catches the drip tray and it's a bit stabby stabby when you pull it out. All is not lost - I've found some polished 5mm OD ultra thin wall superelastic NiTiNOL tube at work - same as this stuff and as recently ridiculed in the Concept Bikes thread. Cutting it might be fun and I'm guessing the ends won't want to swage.

  • Sage Smart Grinder Pro. Grind is currently at the coarser end of what I'd call espresso.

Out of curiosity what number is this? I range from 6 with crap supermarket beans up to like 12. Never needed to go coarser than that.

  • New place opened up in Shoreditch.

  • 14-15. It's not a calibrated scale so my 14-15 could easily be the same as your 12. It feels a bit like the burrs are touching if you go to 4 on the scale. I grind the cheap coffee club beans on 6, for comparison. But interesting to know that you have to grind within that range with different beans too.

  • Just leaving this here...

  • Probably worth seeing regardless, for those who were wondering.

  • These days this thread's principle raison d'etre is seeing who can be the first to post the Hoff's latest YooToobz?

    N'est pas?

  • I am sure this question has been asked before but I need a new hand grinder ... my porlex has is just warped now. I basically can't get the grinder to stay together while grinding ...

is it really down to just 1zpresso vs aerspeed/aergrind? Seems the latter is harder to find in stock at the mo ...

this seems decently priced compared to other places

  • Nope, but that’s a pretty funny video..!

  • What do you need to grind for? I grind for espresso and went for a 1zpresso JX pro and am really happy with it. Bought direct and arrived in around 10 days for about £60/70 less than buying in UK from BellaBarista.

The JX (non pro) is identical but has (I’m pretty sure) half as many steps in adjustment so will be a little less precise to dial in, which shouldn’t be too big a problem with Aeropress/filter/drip. I remember seeing a video review that showed a step +/- added or removed about 7 seconds in a 2:1 espresso extraction, so might be fine for some at that too.

My suggestion would be to order direct if you can wait that extra week/10 days and either get the Pro for basically the price of the one you linked on Amazon or save a bit and get the non Pro if suitable.

The aergrind etc get good reviews but seeing as they already stopped stocking spares for models that were current a couple of years ago and their customer service is non existent I’d be wary. On the other hand I’ve read of people dealing with 1zpresso straight from Taiwan and getting good responses on spares (sometimes for free when warranted) which is what ultimately made me pull the trigger on that.

  • cheers, by direct do you mean from the US? or Taiwan? Do you have a link? Wasn't import tax an issue?

  • From 1zpresso in Taiwan, off their website https://1zpresso.coffee/

I’d read of people being charged an additional £18 of import + carrier handling fees in the past but that wasn’t the case with me and a couple others who bought recently. When mine arrived it landed in Germany before coming to the UK, so my theory is that with the paperwork being deferred to the UK and the whole brexit shitstorm a small parcels much more likely to get waved through to prevent an even greater backlog than there seem to already be.

  • How do I know what size portafilter my machine needs? If I need to measure what do I measure from and to?

  • I think some portafilters are proprietary and others are for generic eg e61 group heads.

  • This machine didn’t come with a portafilter. I’ve ordered one but it’s 5-7 weeks away.

I figure if I can find out what size I may be able to buy something cheap as a stop gap.

  • What’s the machine?

  • ah good to know! thanks
Shipping is not $30 with them ... not sure if it still makes it worthwhile. will do some research. cheers!

  • Severin ka 5995

I’ve had a good look on the internet and struggled to find anything

  • I have a 58mm machine and the shower screen is exactly 58mm wide, so I guess that's what you measure, but I suspect that machine will require a proprietary PF and possibly proprietary basket.

  • In coffee I didn't make myself news, made it out to Bon, Browns of Brokley's new spot in Dulwich this morning - pretty ace. There's a pretty great bunch of coffee spots in Dulwich now; Lane Eight, Oru, Bon all distinctly better than your run of the mill.

  • I’ve measured quite crudely with a tape measure and I’d say it’s 60mm
