  • As Andy said, leave the raspberries if you only put them in this winter/spring. Then find out what variety they are, and if they are a primocane (fruit on the new canes each year), or a floricane (fruits on last years canes). You need to cut them back accordingly in about February each year

  • I reckon I can level it enough with rakes. I'm not looking for bowling green. Just somewhere green for my daughter and nephew to play over summer. They'll likely ruin any "nice" lawn.

  • Normally I am not a fan of decking, despite building a dozen or so every year. This one, however, made perfect sense. As you can see from the fence, the corner of this garden was an unusable area, gathering every lost ball and toy like a magnet. Now it will be a pleasant space, catching the last of the sun and with an inset stone area for the chimnea for use after dark. I am just waiting on the custom trellis for the back and sides to allow climbers to grow over to provide dappled shade.

  • Ran out of time to do any sowing due to some of the beastly bramble roots matrices taking forever to dig out of that bottom left corner. But this is as much as I'm clearing for now.

  • Great, now you can lose your keys in the gap between the decking and the fence, right?

  • Wrong, hatch installed!

  • Any gardeners know the answer to this?

Chainsaw chain - I see two that have the right bar length (14inch), pitch (3/8) and gauge (0.05)

One has 50 drive links the other has 52.

    Does this make any difference?

  • Ah, OK, let me correct: Now you can lose your keys down the specially-installed hatch and never see them again, right? :)

  • Yeah ours has started to flower now

  • OK, so no pruning. I don't think I have the patience for gardening!

  • Wrong, hatch installed!

Top tip... install the right hatch.

  • Hatch is on the side, so you would have to throw them very accurately. I always put a hatch on any decking with crawling room underneath, I cite the lost wedding ring/£50 note as the reason! This is also why all decking should be screwed together as nailed decking has to be virtually destroyed to remove or replace a board.

Far too serious an answer to a flippant question, but might be helpful to forum DIYers!

  • Never underestimate a left hatch.

  • At least its not Rob Hatch.

  • If it was Cunton Cuntby I would rivet the whole decking airtight with him inside, then burn it.

  • On (im)mature reflection, if it were Rob Hatch I would merely lock him inside for a couple of hours whilst taunting him in an outrageous French accent.

  • I'd play him every single episode of 'Allo' Allo!, and at the end of every one say "that's you, that is" and make him watch the next one.

  • That might possibly fall foul of the 'cruel and unusual punishments' clause of the Geneva Convention, I think burning alive and yer basic taunting should be OK.

  • Nice work - was the pagoda off the peg or custom size?

I have a crappy one that needs replacing.

  • Made to measure, the upright posts form part of the support structure of the decking. Easily built from 4"x 4" posts and 6"x 2" tops, treated eased edged timber available from most builders merchants. A bloody sight cheaper and stronger than ready made kits.

  • That might possibly fall foul of the 'cruel and unusual punishments' clause of the Geneva Convention

Unusual, yes. Cruel? 'Ye shall reap as ye shall sow' etc.

  • Hatch is on the side, so you would have to throw them very accurately.

Well, that's no good. How are you supposed to lose your key, then?

  • Chuck it over the fence

  • Why are the keys in the garden anyway? Shouldn't they be in the bowl?
