  • Sounds like a helicoil has been used to repair the clamp and whomever did it has done it incorrectly. There should be no movement, almost preload since the helicoil is pretty much a spring that you are putting into a smaller hole than it is at in it's free state. It should not fall out !

  • Ive never used a helicoil so have no experience but that is likely what it was. Just have a hard time figuring out how the front der threads got so bad that one had to use one. Bit weird but i guess it happens.

Was actually the front der and not the clamp that had the torn threads unfortunately.

  • Usually it's just someone has either cross-threaded or over-tightened. You could always get the thread retapped and use a larger bolt

  • I thought about that possibility but i think i would then need to also drill the adjusting curved plate (that comes with campy der) for the larger bolt that attaches to the outside of the braze on and possibly also adjust the braze on mount itself on a new frame to take the larger bolt. And umm thats not gonna happen. Even if i could get away without touching the frame it just seem like a lot to get done when i wont be able to do it myself. Likely just easier to get another even tho they are hard to source.

  • Put an allen bolt in from the back and secure with a nut up front for now?

  • Yeah its a possibility but i have a few complete chorus ones i can use for now. So im putting one of those on the tommasini and stealing that one for the battaglin to make it complete.

Maybe i can get another one of those helicoils in there later or somtin. Just bit annoying to find out on buildday. But usually there is some hick up with a bike build so its just part of the process i guess. I also sold the extra rs front der i had just a month ago after purchasing the group ha .)

Should be able to testride today i think.

  • Got this on ebay today. First road bike really, will collect in a couple of weeks. Clean up, silver post, quill stem and some nice bars and I'm away I think. Will post up when I have it

  • Is the fork threaded?
Doesn’t look like an adapter, maybe just shimmed for the 1 1/8” stem.

  • Like the paint - plenty of potential there. I’ve got a bit of a thing for 6700 cranksets, they look great 👍

  • @PhilDAS I think so but not sure. Message from the seller:

Just to clarify the headset - It is fitted with an adapter so that I can use a 1”steerer aheadset. I have a feeling I may have an old campag threaded headset in the bottom of a toolbox somewhere but if not I’ll let you know what I can source and how much (I can fit it no problem).

  • @190-215GPa cheers :) looking forward to it. Post should be easy to swap out but not sure on headset (see above comment), quill stem and bars to swap in

  • Right so they’ve fitted a threadless headset. So the stem I guess is clamped on the fork threads or a steerer extender?
Dunno. Either way, sounds safer to go back to quill. Should look good

  • A good opportunity to get rid of the red bar tape for some white. That'll scrub up nice!

  • There shouldn't be enough threads exposed to clamp a stem on???

  • Yeah that’s what I thought so maybe there’s an extender hiding in there. The stem is clearly clamped to a 1 1/8” tube and the carbon spacers are oversize too but there’s nothing threaded on to “adapt” it to threadless

  • Could be 1" and then a big shim underneath everything with the stem effectively being held in place by the star-fangled nut. Sounds death-trappy though

  • @PhilDAS @Señor_Bear how can he have fitted a threadless headset? Will report back! What would be a good off the shelf threaded headset replacement? Cheers both

  • My M(erckx)BK Record Max is loading.

  • Dura Ace (expensive), Campag Record (good if you're running Campy), Chris King (expensive and hard-to-find), Ritchey (budget option)

  • @Señor_Bear thank you

  • apart from the coloured stems those are a pair of beauties. very nice indeed

  • Anodised stems are the peak of those builds.😎

Tired of classical, "seen everywhere" parts.
100mm ano stems were hard to find tho.

Have a green one too, looking for a green frame 😁

    But thanks

  • That record max is looking good. Nice.

  • Give me a shout if you ever want to sell those Zipp wheels!
