Which Tyres?

  • I agree the old 25's did seem narrower than most other brands 25's but the new tyres sizing seems on par with other brands, so I'm pretty sure you're not going to get the new Corsa Evo 28's in there, they are maybe only very slightly smaller than the 28's GP4000's.

And you've not even got the calipers on in that shot which may reduce that clearance further, depending on the brakes. On my Nikor I found the 28's would rub on the front Campagnolo skeleton brake, but the older pre-skeleton Campagnolo brakes gave more clearance and it was fine. But that has a Max fork with more clearance than yours. The new Evo's 28's do seem noticeably more balloony compare to the new 25's. Sorry I can't show you any photos as I'm an idiot and I left my phone in a van in Rainham yesterday. #facepalm

I've got the new ones in 25 & 28, but both I have running on new wider style rims like Pacenti Brevet. If you have the older narrower style rims the tyre may sit more like a traditional light bulb on the rim making them taller and giving you even less clearance. So I'm pretty sure the 28's are not going to fit in that fork.

The new versions definitely last longer than the old Master's too which is good, and they were delivered super fast direct from Veloflex, but that was before Brexit kicked in so assume you now have pay more for them and wait longer for them to arrive.

  • Thank you! I might go just go for them. I like the very minimal branding and the thread pattern too. The Schwalbe G-One Allround Performance I am running on my gravel bike have a similar fine knobbed pattern which works very well for me on and off road.

  • Cheers, mate! Thanks for the useful info. I won't risk it with the 28's then, it's probably for the best.

  • Looking at something for my Spacehorse to commute on. Probably 40-ish to fit under the mudguards. The commute is 85% road 15% gravel, if not less than that. I was using Vittoria Hypers and they were okay, but I was getting a few punctures and they weren’t that great on wet gravel. Before that I was using Clement (now Donnelly) MSO X’Plors in 40 and they were great. Was looking at Panaracer Gravel king’s in 38’s (the 43’s I was going to get just sold out in the price I’m willing to pay) and the Specialized Sawtooth in 42’s.

I haven’t heard much about the Sawtooth. Anyone had experience with them? I’ve heard good and bad things about the GK’s. Can get the GK’s and Sawtooth for a similar price. I’d like to fit the biggest tyre I can under my guards. I won’t be running them tubeless.

  • A glowing report on Schwalbe all round tle.
I have just retired the rear,
    700x35,
    rider 70kg,
    35 psi
    no visitations.

The way it wears out is surprising,
the 2 central knobs just vanish,
the wear then slows wayyy down.
The little knobs offer incredible traction even on snow,
    and icy roads.
There are 14 knobs along the paper in the picture ,
when the 4 central ones are gone,
    traction then drops sharply.
    Cuts are rare ,
    I have pictured the worst.
I could use them on the road a little more.

  • I second that!
I am running 700c x 38 (622 x 40?) G-One Allround Performance TLE on my gravel bike and I love them on and off the road. Would buy again.

  • How do they fare in UK gravel aka bog conditions?

  • In actual mud? Obviously not nearly as well as mud tyres but a bit better than slicks. Excellent on typical/rideable bridalway mix of rocks, gravel, grass, packed mud and a little wet mud. Not as quite grippy as things with sideknobz like Riddlers/Raddlers or similar but predictable and much better on lighter surfaces and the road. I rate them.

  • I had the cheaper version and was very unimpressed by them. Then again, I remember particularly not liking the casing and finding it sluggish and unpredictable at pressure below 40psi (80kg rider, 700x35c that was)

Would not want to ride offroad with these from October to April, good as slicks for summer gravel

  • They have these tightly packed small knobs so if it is really muddy they bog up. But so do most tyres that don't have a big and generously spaced tread pattern. In my opinion they shed the dirt reasonably well again when they get the chance. I don't tend to send it through deep mud and puddles on this bike so I am perfectly fine with that. They excel in dryer conditions and mixed surfaces. I did the 2020 P&L New Forest trip and Brother in the Wild'20 on them. Felt completely comfortable and safe.

  • Hmm. Looks good. I can get some Panaracer GK’s for ~$50 (Australian), the Sawtooth for $80 or the G-One’s for ~$65, so it’s a toss up between the Panaracer and Schwalbe.

EDIT: Just got sent a 12% off code for the Panaracer’s, so I’ll get them.

EDIT 2: The few reviews I read said the GK 38’s measure as 40mm, so I’m happy with that.

  • I've got the Corsa Evo and find they measure up exactly the same as the last generation corsa/master. Definitely smaller than most brands still.

  • You can't beat an mtb thread in mud ,
but I wouldn't use a tyre with less than 4/5mm left of knobs mtbing.

I was wary of them initialy,
I venture far too often in mtb territory,
go mountainaring and skiing regularly biking up.
They 'll be hard to beat.

  • Thanks mate. Glad to hear a first hand experience about this. That's exactly what I was suspecting.

  • On the road bike I have hookless carbon rims and tyres need replacing.

    How are GP5000 TL?

Currently have G One Speed 30c, the only downside is wet grip isnt great.

  • I'd like everything please, in a 30-32mm package

Mainly road, "fast commuting" (laps of regents thrown into the mix) and occasional gravel path type use (mainly chaperoning little cookiemonster on family cycles - hence the width). Reasonable longevity and puncture resistance required (conti 4 season levels acceptable).

Will run with tubes (most likely) so not bothered about tubeless. And I struggle with the fact everything bike related has doubled in price so prefer £30 to £50

Thinking of the Spesh Roubaix Pro 2Bliss in 31mm which can be had for £28. Unless of course they actually have "2Bliss" written on the sidewall.

    Reasonable choice? Better alternatives?

  • Good tyres, I like them and have been happy with them in the wet.

I wasn't sure if they played nice with hookless rims though - sure someone (maybe Zipp?) don't recommend gp5000 as compatible?

  • Yep, Spesh are good tyres, also Pirelli Cinturanto, obviously more spendy but very good tyres.

  • I've got some tan wall WTB Expanse in 32 that I'm selling at the moment, they fit your needs pretty well

  • ah continental specifically says no hookless rims .. Pirelli then

  • They don't want people to miss out on the 'almost impossible to mount' experience, hookless make it easier?

  • How are GP5000 TL?

Fast, supple, pretty resistant to the P-fairy, absolute fuckers to fit.

  • fuck that, had a great experience installing tubeless in 20 mins with my Pirelli on Talbot so went with P Zero race TLR in 30c; £86 for a pair isnt too bad. The G Ones speed lasted pretty long, easily over 5k miles.

  • I've got some GP5000s on at the moment and they're worse than GP4ks. Worse grip in the wet and cut up to shit. I got punctures on 3 commutes in a row, now I have to pick bits out of them after every ride.

  • Where did you get them for £43?
