Yes, they have different spurious numbers marked on them 😂
-
• #1328
Joking aside, if people are stupid enough to buy these, then markings would suffice, and the proof that Rennen are stupid too is that they do actually cut them slightly differently. Of course, a fixed pitch chain doesn't care about that, and just finds the place where two adjacent roller contact points are half an inch apart.
-
• #1329
Yeah surely if a 42.2 tooth chainring still only actually has 42 teeth, one rotation pulls 42 (half) links of chain, regardless of slight differences in diameter or however they're doing it
-
• #1330
Yes slightly different diameter. Basically slightly oval rings for singlespeeds (which is always butters imo). Does boggle the mind how people fall for this but I know a bmx coach running one 🤷🏽♂️

I hope they're cheap enough for Xav to get a test sample for the lolz

Magical space tyre can also act as braking surface.

Just cherry picking some key properties of NiTinol which make it suitable for use in tyres:
Fatigue failures of nitinol devices are a constant subject of discussion.
Tyres that will fly apart in use, no issues there.
there has been a great deal of concern in the medical industry regarding the release of nickel, a known allergen and possible carcinogen.
As they wear down, the dust is carcinogenic. No issues there.
There are constant and long-running discussions regarding inclusions in nitinol
Failure points in the material are always present. Ok, no problem.

So you´re saying that technology developed for something that move 152 meters per hour isn't ideal for bike use? It explains the lack of brakes at least, you can just use you're feet!
-
• #1337
You're just jealous because no one wanted to invest in your full carbon tyres idea.
-
• #1338
You always have to bring that up, don't you.
Can't you people just leave me alone.

have we discussed the Classified Powershift Hub Gear yet?

I'd like to see their evidence for a claim of >99% efficiency.
Combining a dérailleur with an internally geared hub isn't new.
Combining a single chain ring with a 2-speed epicyclic isn't new, and one might argue that putting it at the front (Truvativ Hammerschmidt) might be preferable to putting it in the wheel.
The new product seems to rely only on axle clamping friction to react the reverse torque of the stator gear, which is a technique known in engineering as "winging it"
How much are you prepared to gamble that they will still be in business when you've worn out the proprietary cassette and need a replacement?

At 3:36 in the video you can see that the through-axle has a long splined section, which looks like it might engage with splines in the dropout and the planetary gear system (visible at 4:06 and 8:15), locking them together.

So you also need a proprietary frame 🙂

What a video. Love the extended bits on lathing rubber and changing the tyres while the rest of the bike and it's awesome innovations are overlooked!
Genteel editing and voiceover is great too.
-
• #1344
Yeah, I couldn't work that out. I know nothing about through-axle frames, but that one appears to have an insert on the NDS that forms the dropout. Is that not normal?
-
• #1345
Is that not normal?
I think it's common but not universal, a bit like bolt-on dérailleur hangers. It's a serious impediment to the marketability if the product only works with selected frames and needs different inserts for each one.

I mean these are just funny, but the back story is interesting:

Fuck me that was painful to read.

What hurt you so bad Jonny?

$1000 but it's not been tested except for a couple of anecdotes. Would sir like a bridge to go with his titanium jockey wheels?

these are just funny
What's funny about them is that the "First wave CNC" aesthetic is going to appeal most to the Gen-X crowd who remember it from the first MTB boom, and now have the levels of money and boredom required to drop a grand on a dérailleur cage.
But there must be some physical difference in between the chainrings even if it doesn't offer any mechanical difference shirley.
