  • Hi all,

Just wanted to throw this in current projects as it's my first conversion/build and I'm actually super proud of it. This comes with some caveats though.

    1. I'm not sure if by converting instead of fully restoring, I've committed a cardinal sin
    2. The conversion was not particularly difficult and I had a lot of help from friendly neighbours, lufguss members and the bike shop (massive shout out to Rat Race Cycles in Nunhead).

I found this 1989 Peugeot Le Tour in the street after one of my neighbours put a bunch of bikes out that they no longer wanted. It had all original components but the frame had a slight dent in the right seatstay and surface rust on the frame. Thinking about my skill level and the quality of the frame I decided a single-speed conversion was probably the route I wanted to go down.

Will probably just run through this step by step to have a record for myself and so people can point out where I could improve in future or what they would have done differently.

    1. Complete clean and disassemble/throw away of gross cabling (BUT left brake cable in the internal cabling for easy replace)
    2. Purchase a shit load of cleaning products and ultra-fine wool
    3. Degrease bb and headset bearings and all threads etc
    4. Went round to a mates workshop (lol) and drilled out the small chainring from the original crankset, leaving the large 52t chain ring which was riveted to the crank
    5. Ultra-fined wooled and cleaned the original CLB calipers and brake levers (decided against sanding as 1. time consuming and 2. worried there was too much room for error and possibly not enough tools to buff properly)
    6. Reinstalled BB and headset after thorough degreasing and regreasing - reinstalled cleaned cranks & chainring
    7. Purchased a single-speed conversion kit and shimano sprocket like a FOOL as I didn't have a free hub body under my cassette on the cheap Evans wheel I had tucked away (currently for sale somewhere in components)
    8. Bought a BLB 19t freewheel like a FOOL - weird gear ratio. Decent for the hill next to my house but I spin out after any significant effort on the flat
    9. Bike shop time - I gave them a list of little tasks but I think they have enough mechanics so they actually did a bit more to give me a functional bike. Move the spacers and dished the rear wheel to improve chain line and sorted out brake cabling. I wanted to do this myself but in reality I'm glad someone took a look over the brakes.
    10. Taped the bars with some super nice cinelli cork tape - a new favourite
    11. Lufguss sticker time

Only thing I'm still slightly concerned with on this build is the QR on the rear wheel. Feels incredibly taught but I've seen people warning of impending doom for anyone that using them on fixed - is it as bad on single-speed?

This is somewhat of a personal note for me so I can remember what I did down the line but if anyone stumbles across this and has any constructive feedback that would be appreciated.

Also does anyone know what that frame gloss is called that comes in a nail polish bottle? Forgot to get the name of it from the bike shop.
