Funny that you say about sizes as I was watching this the other week and its interesting to see how the 39mm and 41mm are very close on many dimensions. Great analysis on this video. I know stated dimensions don't usually reflect the actual sizes in real life but these are very close in most 'cases', ha:

Unfortunately he doesn't have the same comparison for 36mm vs 39mm which would be interesting, im sure its out there somewhere anyway. One interesting thing that I did learn though about the 36mm vs the 41mm is that the hour markers are slightly different even though the overall design is the same, minus hand size and text spacing etc.

The 36mm markers are bevelled on all four sides, the 41mm is only bevelled on two.

    Prefer the 36mm markers.

I dug out the photos where I tried the 34/36/39 on. To me, the 34 definitely looked small and the 39 looked big (on my wrist, for the style of watch, anyway - most of my watches are divers in the 40-44 range).

All three were significantly different from each other. I can see why they didn’t add the 41 on top when it’s so close to the 39.

  • For me I think the 39mm is great dimension wise, for my slim wrists anyway (tried the red grape as no black at the time), but I prefer the double baton hands and dial layout of the 36mm, so when I watched that video it gave me some hope about the 41mm as its very close to the old 39mm. Only tried vintage DJ 36mm wise, so my opinion could change if I tried a newer OP 36mm.

I still think it was a pointless move by Rolex though. Why create a 41mm OP when the dimension are so close to the 39mm you already had? I guess some would say that it then goes inline with the 41mm submariner update but then the OP is the perfect watch to dress up or down, were as the Sub is an all out sports / tool watch and I feel that the 39mm spec reflects that well and separates the collection well too.

Maybe its because they wanted to charge more for very little manufacturing cost difference, if any at all?
