It was how you used to show off the new vinyl to your mates when they came over.
Get stoned and every 30 minutes someone had to get up to put the other side on.

skin up?
My first thought was foreskin restoration, perhaps with a dinked 45

Oh. And read this because it was relevant.

The only reason to own a record player is Instagram posts.

Every 30 minutes?
So give the side time to be fully grokked before flipping the lp? -
• #9633
Depends on the quality of the cutting. Pink Floyd LP's were usually about 23 minutes per side. You could get up to 40 minutes a side but less quality music.
Plus you had to be arsed to get out of the chair when it finished.

It's kind of like the idea of digital storage nowadays.
There was only so much area of vinyl on a LP. If you cut wider tracks to allow the needle to move more then you had less space on the LP.
Better quality music=Wider tracks=Less area=Less playing time.

Also why you had EP's and LP's on 12" vinyl.
-
• #9636
Mostly true although Nick Lowe claimed no drop in quality on the densely packed "Get Happy!"

This is why digital is always going to be better quality than analogue.
A one and a zero are the same width.
Don't really get this thing about vinyl nowadays. It's outdated and will never be as good as digital. How many 45's and 78's do you play?
-
• #9638
Don't have the technology to play 78s but I throw on LPs pretty regularly.
Was never a 45 collector, I have maybe two, my wife has a dozen or so. -

That is if someone realised the record had actually finished.

Think I had a record player that was capable of playing a 78 back in the 80's.
Used to work with Technics 1210's Mk.2 continually as they were the workhorses of DJ culture. If I had to buy one nowadays it would be one of those.
I do actually own some 12" LP's but only because they are rare editions and are in plastic bags.
Went through most music formats, the DCC was amazing but pretty much only for live music recording to then send to a studio for mastering.
The Minidisc format was cool but then MP3 appeared.

Yeah. Woke up many times to the 'scrit, scrit, scrit' of the end loop.

• #9642
Didn't MFSL do mega expensive pressings on 45rpm for this reason?
-
• #9643
Don't know. Taking the avacado and toast money?
-
• #9644
Pretty sure that back before vinyl was cool they were selling for £50 up vs under a tenner for "normal" 180g vinyl

I assume you’re trolling, but vinyl sounds just as good as digital on my setup.
-
• #9646
There are tons of bad vinyl pressings in the world and poor-sounding digital recordings. Who gives a shit, at the point you're spending as much time and money as people in this thread are, all that matters is you like what you hear and the way it gets to you.
I mean that in terms of anyone rubbishing format A or format B - I bet all your cables suck . . .

To be honest there are only two important parts of analogue. How we hear it (speakers) and how we record it (microphones).
Everything else just depends on how well that information is delivered. And believe me a digital format is superior.
When lockdown finishes and you go to a gig have a good look at the mixing desk. It'll be digital, most of the processing will be via a laptop and any recordings will be on HDD or SSD.
Same with recording studios.

Apart from live bands and triple analogue recordings?
