There was only so much area of vinyl on a LP. If you cut wider tracks to allow the needle to move more then you had less space on the LP.
Better quality music=Wider tracks=Less area=Less playing time.
Mostly true although Nick Lowe claimed no drop in quality on the densely packed "Get Happy!" : )
This is why digital is always going to be better quality than analogue.
A one and a zero are the same width.
Don't really get this thing about vinyl nowadays. It's outdated and will never be as good as digital. How many 45's and 78's do you play?
