There was only so much area of vinyl on a LP. If you cut wider tracks to allow the needle to move more then you had less space on the LP.
Better quality music=Wider tracks=Less area=Less playing time.
Mostly true although Nick Lowe claimed no drop in quality on the densely packed "Get Happy!" : )
Didn't MFSL do mega expensive pressings on 45rpm for this reason?
