  • I did a bit of experimenting making blades using steel from van leaf springs. Smaller ones were ok but I couldn’t get enough heat onto bigger ones with a blowtorch so stacked bricks together to form a void big enough for the blade and some charcoal then aimed the blowtorch inside. Don’t use roof tiles they explode.

  • Just found this abandoned project from then, I gave up because I’d filed the area between the handle and blade too thin.

  • Good advice, cheers!

  • I've also contemplated building a hot charcoal fire by the beach and heat treating it that way.

I will not use roof tiles haha. Looks like you could still make a decent sized knife from the remaining steel on the abandoned project

  • Is this the go-to budget hori-hori?

Looking for an Easter present for my mum.

  • Picked up a 30cm Silky blade off ebay at a decent price.

Handle is just some scrap wood from a planter. Making is going to be slow I think and I split one of the first ones.

But here it is so far.

  • niwaki? same price(ish) I'm sure.

  • ignore.

  • @hugo7

Agreed on the Niwaki, bought one for my wife a couple of years back, had no issues.

  • Cheers.

    Looks nice and presenty too.

  • I have one & have gifted one, it was well received and I find it to be a very useful tool.

No experience of Niwaki but looks good too and includes the holster. The holster for that barebones hori-hori is extra.

  • The Niwaki is lovely, I bought a couple of hand hoes as well... Also very cheap and they feel great to use...

  • Anyone made or bought a knife grinder / belt grinder?

  • Made one with a bench grinder and two mdf discs. One I coated the edge with glue and grit, the other gets covered with jewellers rouge. Takes about a minute per knife to get them razor sharp. Have also used it to sharpen axes and hatchets.

    A bit like this http://dcknives.blogspot.com/p/diy-sharpening-wheel.html?m=1

Except I have another disc with iirc 400 grit. But I’d need to check

  • Oh aye. Nice and simple. I’m looking for the ultimate deburring / shaping grinder for the workshop, furniture rather than knives. All the yanks are mad for the 2x72 knife making belt grinders. Think I’ve found a good solution though:

  • I gave my partner the barebones one. She uses the serrated edge a lot, which the niwaki lacks. Also, barebones is stainless, if that matters.

  • Take a visit to Blenheim Forge in Peckham for the ultimate in self made belt linishers. Impressive but slightly scary

  • Been meaning to go and visit them at some point. The tools I see being used on Instagram look mental. Don’t know how they get away with the H&S.

  • Been using the BB Nata at the allotment to remove some unwanted Cherry in a hedge, plus making stakes from some larger pieces.

It is a nice tool, seems to have a bit of heft to it which means it isn't necessary to swing it hard to make good cuts. Not sure how to explain that better, just compared to the Tramontino i'm using less swing to cut, I'd not use be using the T. for the thicker bits either.

Not used the chisel end yet, will be good for digging through roots but I've usually got a mattock-y type thing to hand for that too which is a crude but effective solution.

  • Niwaki hori hori arrived.

Fuck me it's a lot more brutal looking in the flesh. More Rambo than Monte D.

Not sure what my mum will make of it, or whether it's going to be a bit big for her hands.

    Oh well it's done now.

  • Is anyone Bristol based and able to possibly give me a hand or recommend someone to repair a kitchen paring knife please? Needs a couple of new rivets only

  • Had this come up as an advert for a cheap Japanese knife advert seems to appeal to a certain kind of person. Not knife porn at all.

  • "When you have dates coming to your 450-sq-ft New York City studio every other weekend (as I do)." ..... 🤢 Tactical bro kitchen knife 🤮

  • ^ I wonder what business cards he carries.
