  • I was just about to suggest the same.

  • 660 is £10k and Tunono is about 4k less.

  • Aprilia RS660

Definitely a beautiful thing. If I were to finance, it would be 180% more expensive than an MT09 per month.

Not trying to just make the answer be an MT09 but bang for buck, it's got to be right up there.

  • You should consider buying me a nice summer bike too. I guess that's not the kind of suggestion you wanted though.

How about the BMW RNineT or whatever it's called. They come in a lot of varieties. If you need it to be cheaper to run then it has to be less sporty.

It has to be worth the money for the 899 to hear it crackling on the over run while you engine brake it into some bend in an English country road though.

Also, are the Augustas still silly money?

  • Can you get a second hand Tuono 1100 for 6k? If so BARGAIN. They are absolute weapons and sound deadly. Properly license busting missiles though.

  • And here I am thinking about a 90’s XJ600N, on the premise I might keep my license riding it!

  • Can’t recommend the Tuono 1100 enough - they are astonishing bikes!

  • A bike that can still be fun at sane speeds for the roads you ride on is a good thing. Being able to push massive numbers on one wheel is causing a lot of people to lose their license now.

The speeds have increased a lot since a few people were pushing a ton at the Ace Cafe. The roads have not improved by the same amount and they are way more crowded.

  • I was talking about this with some guys outside the mechanics’ earlier. I have somewhat banned myself from looking at any sports bike for at least another year. Ideally, until I am financially competent enough to afford track days. It’s just not worth the risk on roads now. At least, here in the South West, the flow of traffic carries a massive risk.

Someone I know got away with 105mph on the A4 a few weeks ago, but only because the friend riding in front of him got nicked. Traffic cop admitted he was lucky that the conviction would be difficult to get through, or he’d be getting summons like his mate.

  • I’m totally with you. 120hp is already far too much for the street really. And thrashing lighter, lower power bikes is more fun.

What about a minty 848 if you can find one for a good deal? More ceremony to a proper dry clutch, trellis-frame duchess.

  • Ok just realised there’s two versions of that. You can get the 1000’s V4’s for under 6k.

For the power range, comfort, speed and capability, they sound banging. Would love a spin on one.

In the grand scheme of things, they’re all silly bikes. Buy an SV and be done with it.

Still want an Aprilia V4 though. That NOISE.

@Soul I’ll chip in good beers if you get one. Just listen to the damned thing

  • Ducati? I’d sooner own a 2-smoke 130kg gazillion-bhp weapon, and be done with it.

    It’s a sad reality 200kg 4T’s are the sensible/affordable option.

  • thrashing lighter, lower power bikes is more fun.

Word. To throw another suggestion out there what about a Kawasaki 636 b1h? They're getting quite cheap now and although it's a mouses fart over 600 it does have nice torque. My ZX-6RR was a demon on b roads. Also if you really want an MT10, just get that. Although 848 sounds good too ;)

  • Ninja 400

Its the Mazda mx5 of motorbikes, you can thrash it all the time without loosing your license and parts are cheap so track days aren't expensive.

  • I looked at various Tuono examples but dealer support appears to be awful and they’re not very reliable, which is a bad combo!

I’d go for my s1000r again - similar torque to the V4 bikes, low gearing, smart suspension and relatively light mean it’s fun below the speed limit too.
Obviously I accidentally hit a ton overtaking an HGV the other day but it’s happy surging between corners on country lanes at 40-60 too.

  • What about the NC30. S2000 of m/bikes?

  • It's easy to get sucked in. I just spent an hour looking at stuff on MCN because of this thread and then had to remind myself I've only ridden a few miles on the bike I have this year.

I don't have enough of a reason to have any new bikes but I have plenty of desire!

  • Haha yep, keep looking HDs whilst having ridden my very nice actual bike <2hrs so far.

  • Now I've decided I might want one of these :-

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triumph-Thruxton-1200-TFC/274568111281?hash=item3fed88e4b1:g:csYAAOSw4NFgN-fV

Although I have no reason, I guess normally I would get out on my own bike and scratch the itch.

  • The A2 compliant lairy 300s are supposed to be a hoot.
I worked with a guy who sold his R1 for an R300 as it was much easier to flick about, just as quick away from the line, and he only missed the litre for monster speed (which is illegal so moot really)

  • Hopefully Yamaha will bring out an r4 soon to compete with Kawasaki

  • Interestingly enough, my friend with the Tuono 1100 ALSO has a new Thrux amd loves it. They’re grunty as hell but a bit heavy and run out of puff slightly early. Way better than the older ones though - night and day.

11k on his Tuono and absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it aside from a prodigious thirst for Dino juice.

  • When the weather is dreary but you still need facebook marketplace photos

  • Does he have the bullet fairing, I would have to have that. The shocks started to annoy me to look at after a while. It seems pretty decent and perfect for tearing up A roads in the summer.

  • Uncle’s just got this, this month. He’s not a small fella, and I bet he rocks up open face helmet, covered in bugs.
