  • Whenever I've done cam chains it's always a bit disappointing that there's still plenty of noise afterwards. Same with the R80, sounds like an industrial sewing machine when the oil's hot but even with the very expensive upgrade there's still plenty of noise from the rest of the engine!

R80 is pushrods but the tappets are there just tapping away.

  • Well, I am loathe to do any more work on it until I know it passes MOT this afternoon. A bit nervous.

If it fails for reparable reasons then maybe I add camchain to the list. If it passes, I’m conflicted on keeping it as a runabout and selling it to make space for something more useful. If I sell, I’ll just advise the new owner.

Guy I know has a bone stock unmolested 90’s XJ600N (50k on the clocks I think) with almost no issues. Had advertised around £1100, but with a view of getting £900 if I was interested. Even if I get a stupid low price for the GN, that makes the XJ affordable as a road miles bike.

  • Funny about your MOT and taking out the GN.
Just about to do the same.

Got rid of the CBR and quite glad I did, let me spruce up the SV after a partial engine rebuild.
Took it out to fuel up and I have no idea how I toured Europe on it.
It. Is. Tiny. Tiny and angry.
Forgot I put an R6 throttle tube on it so it was exciting manoeuvring on it.

Looks great with them, but reckon the clip-ons will have to go.

Tiger got a service done and new cam chain tensioner. Original exhaust will go back on as the aftermarket one is waaaay too loud.

  • Completely understand about the cam chain. I just meant it shouldn't put anyone off buying it.

The Diversion used to be very popular. Always thought it was similar to the Bandit. £900 seems like a decent price but don't you like customising your bikes? Wouldn't that possibly end up damaging the value?
