eBay as a back up
I'm sure there are good wheels on eBay but I'd always rather buy from a forum. I've bought a couple of sets on YACF and done loads of miles on them with no issues, and good ones come up on here all the time. Main thing is to find out the history and reason for sale.
Do you want disc or rim brake? If that latter, I had a quick look on here and these came up. If I could justify another set of wheels I might go for them myself.

I bought a set of Ultegra wheels off YACF in the Autumn for £100 and am using them as my winter wheels (I needed them as the guy off eBay was fixing my other ones!). They have been great. I'd be happy to use them for a road event. On smooth tarmac they'd most likely be faster than a set of high quality gravel wheels. Something with deeper rims would be faster still though. And you could sell them for not much less after to put towards your gravel wheels.

Kinlin XR31
Didn't know you'd switched to XR31: good rims, really strong and very aero for Al.
Assymetric rear is a pain with tubeless though - but you won't be worrying about that! -

What do you mean "switched"? I've been running one since 2016 the first TCR I did.
I actually bought two of them but it turns out the SP dynamo hubs weren't offset so I bought a (non-offset) Velocity Aileron for the front instead. That was destroyed by a scooter in London so I got the DT Swiss 511db and at some point (maybe the next year) I was running that stupid deep Light Bicycle rim on the front. When that Kinesis 4SD frame cracked and I got the Tripster, I went back to the DT Swiss front wheel (w/ thru axle hub) and then I was hit by the car which destroyed the Kinlin rear, but since I still had the Kinlin rim from 2016 I'd never used, that got built into another rear wheel on DT Swiss hub which I'm still riding today. It was tubeless for Badlands but it's back to road use now and tubes. #csb

I had clocked these myself yesterday and was interested, but I wasn’t sure about the price. Is that reasonable?
Been keeping an eye on this thread in recent days as I’m kiiiiind of committed to doing the Dales Divide on the May bank hol weekend (600km c2c from Cumbria). Looking to do it on my Trek Crockett, which currently has the standard/tank spec Bontrager Affinity disc wheels on it with 32mm slicks. Clearly need to change the tyres at the very least, but I’m tempted to switch the wheels out entirely for something lighter/more suitable as the Affinity wheels are SO HEAVY. Also want the option to be able to slap some slick tyres on for road/commuting use outside of all road events like this one.

OK, cool - I've had them since I got them for TCR in 2016 too. Didn't think many other people were using them.
I always say that they have lasted really well, but I have had the rims on both wheels replaced twice! (Once on both wheels was from brake wear, then the front was me with a metal tyre lever and the rear was a crack by a spoke hole, after it had done a few thousand miles).
Assymetric for front - is that for disc brakes?

It's a pretty full price for second hand wheels. But those rims are expensive new. I don't know much about Hope hubs but they are expensive too, so they're probably good wheels. Might cost £800 to have them built new, without looking anything up.
If I was going to make him an offer I'd start by googling the components and add £xx for building to see what they would cost new as a starting point.
Edit: just did google it:
£250-ish for the hubs
£280 for the rims (if you can get them)
£130 for spokes (£2.40 each x 28 or however many there are x 2)
So £660 for materials
Tyres another £80
Total = £740
Building, £100?
Postage, £20?So £800 wasn't a bad guess, maybe a bit more new. So he's asking 50-60% for one year old. Probably he paid a bit less pre-Covid, but doesn't sound too bad!

I've got kinlin on my dynamo wheel but I've done approximately 20 metres in total around the garage so can't speak for how well the rim lasts. Baptism of fire in the alps I guess after a few all-day mixed rides around home.

Thanks Frank, this is very helpful! Interesting how they are rim brake rims, on disc hubs. Having googled this, whilst it doesn’t seem common, there aren’t any issues in doing it.
Very tempting indeed...

Yeah when I was building the 4S, everyone was like "oh you need assy hubs for discs" but SP dynamo isn't assy, hence buying the Aileron. For 50 quid a piece they're pretty bloody good. Obviously it helps that mine are the disc version so there's no braking wear and it also helps if arsehat drivers don't crash into you, but the one I have now is still going strong.

Wheels are for a disc brake build.
I did clock those but they don't quite do it for me sadly. Useful to end up on the RBW website though, lots of good options there.
Keeping a look out on other forums too, but ideally want the wheels to hand when the frame arrives so I can actually get to riding it. I think this discussion is sending me down the custom route over some carbon Hunt's which is useful, at least this morning it is.

Its now April, and I refuse to let this thread lie dormant for 18 days !
Any updates from anyone on events etc? From my end I am trying to speak to Andi re Iberica Traversa. Its now only 3 weeks away, and Spain shut down hard over the Easter break to prevent spread over the celebration period. -

It is looking like those who entered GBDuro were the smart ones. Very hard to see European stuff happening for UK riders at this stage.

Yeah...Have enquired about the Pan Celtic Race as a backup and they have a waiting list. Shame, as the bit that really appealed (Ireland) they've now removed so it's more through Wales.
