• I dunno where it comes from, but when telling the time, my mum says "it's a five and twenty to / past....(the hour)" instead of simply twenty five to / past.... whatever the hour is.

She only does it for 25.

Riddle me that. Does anyone else's mum do that?

  • Nah but I remember yank pals doing it and some other odd stuff with time which resulted in me having no clue what time they were trying to talk about.

  • "5 and twenty past" is for when the big hand is past the 4 but not as far as the 5, was my understanding.
After 20past, but not as late as 25past.

  • My mother would always say five and twenty to or past an hour, I never asked why. Why did "people" start this new millennium with two thousand and X? At least since we've had twenty twenty it should be plain sailing from now on.

  • Does anyone else's mum do that?

    My dad's mum did.

Apparently there's even weirder stuff going on in Catalonia with time keeping, something along the lines of 1415h being "quarter of three" etc., i.e. a quarter of the third hour has elapsed.

  • nope but my dad used to use that phrase.
