Forgot to reply to the question part of this.
Yeah, all our walls were shit so every wall you see tiled is onto board which is either dot dabbed onto the wall or battened out and then boarded. The sink and toilet are hanging on a built out wall which you can't really tell from the photos I have taken.

thanks that's helpful- I suppose Ill have to see when I finally start it and strip it out - might get away with hardiebacker screwed straight in the wall - the plan is to tile half way up like yours but was considering building out a wall so i could hide the pipes but i had the hip that protrudes through onto the wall plate - what have people done with theirs?
that floor tile grout line not joining the wall is bugging me
looks lovely and is probably the route ill go down myself not diespecker money though
what was your process for tiling walls - tiled straight on? - 1 of our walls its pretty flat and smooth but the wall where sink is attached is soft/crumbly so need to be reskimmed - but was completing applied something like kerdi board all around the bathroom where we want to tile - might be overboard i know
