A combination of useful phrases and the graft of verb conjugations is a good approach. Then you can build a conversational ability, appropriate for a sympathetic listener while building up the details needed to know how the irregularities manifest.

"Puedo usar" saved me a few 10s of km when I cycled across spain and met a road crew relaying the surface in the middle of nowhere. Was also able to make use of a washing machine in one b&b.

I used an interactive book, lots of gaps to fill in and details to read made it really engaging, much more than a screen can, I had two spanish friends I can practice pronounciation with.

I just saw this picture and it reminded me that when I was learning I had a pictorial Spanish/ English dictionary that along with Spanish comic strips were my favourite aids.

I have downloaded a few Tintin books in Spanish. I must actually buy some 'real' Spanish versions though because it will be easier to compare with the 'real' English books I have.

I read them cover-to-cover many times as a kid and know the stories very well.

I also bought this but haven't touched it!

I saw these again (not drunk) and they make more sense now. That's not a bad idea but I think I'd get frustrated having to look up every word. Still, probably more useful than all the "abuelo", "falda", etc Duolingo spits out.

I still want to try that online service where you pay someone to video chat to you in another language but I won't commit and would rather do a class where I'm a bit more anonymous.

Tyre - is it ‘rueda’ as I think that is wheel? Internet say neumático but i reckon that’s just for cars. Can also see llanta but never heard that before. I’ve heard goma, but I don’t think that’s universal.

Etc so forth... maybe we should critique bikes in here in Spanish. Spanish ones. Zeus. Orbea etc

I.e I have / I’ve got, like in English? Or can you only say the bike has a puncture? And do you still use tener?
