  • You've tried isopropyl yeah? Also lightly sand the rotor before thoroughly degreasing it with alcohol.

  • Not on the hardtail, not yet - I sanded, isopropyl'd and replaced the pads on the trail bike and just couldn't get any bite on the back, so bled it. I've not tried it since as I broke a bolt in the rear suspension but the warranty replacement for that should be with me tomorrow so I'll see if there's any difference.

  • New Aussie National Champs Downhill course was finished a few weeks ago - here's a video of the trailbuilders riding it for your viewing pleasure!

Rode it yesterday on a trail bike and scared myself shitless.

  • I can't even believe you ever get scared mate. The videos of you and that Todd guy tearing down some trails are always a hoot.

  • Oh hai! Yes I’ve been trespassing.

Been helping my mother in law out while on furlough and Pencelwood and Stourhead are about 10 mins drive away.

I got an insurance payout in the form of a cyclevoucher so I got my first mountain bike and I’ve been loving it.

Will be gutted to go back to London.

  • That's brilliant! Lovely recovery on the bermy bit!

  • Here goes nothing

  • Are the other dishwasher users in casa dammit aware of this breach of domestic norms?

  • I suspect nothing would surprise her at this point

  • Are Finish dishwasher tablets not going to leave any residue on them?

  • Watch your temps or the 180 rotors will shrink down to 160.

  • Are the other dishwasher users in casa dammit aware of this breach of domestic norms?

I was loading the dishwasher as she left for work, so I would say yes.

  • Watch your temps or the 180 rotors will shrink down to 160.

Given that plan B is to throw all the rotors in the recycling bin this prospect is, whilst not desirable, acceptable.

  • Dibs "all the rotors" plz

  • Well, turns out that the MT8 pads are (on one side) wafer thin (monsieur), and also have an odd stain in the pad material. They'd been working the best of all four callipers, which seems par for the course with Magura brakes (or at least my experience of them).

I have some new pads coming, but currently I can't ride either bike so I can't find out if the dishwasher removed the contamination (if that was the problem) from the system(s).

  • The trail bike does look comical with a 2.3 Hans Dampf up front and a 2.25 Nobby Nik at the back on my Hunt wheelset in comparison to the 2.4 Minions on the Reserve 30's.

  • do you do the same with the discs on your car?

  • I don't tend to work on the cars, it's perfectly possible that the places I use run the rotors through a dishwasher - I've never asked.

  • Managed a quick blat around Cwmcarn Cafall this morning as the first ride on the Bfe Max.

Have been worrying since I placed the order back in Sept that it wasn’t the right choice.

Today has fucked those ideas right off! I loved it!
So surefooted and capable on a fairly technical trail and soon had me taking the jumpier and drop strewn line.

Also the Helm coil forks are truly incredible. So plush and lots of bedding in to do yet.

Very impressed with the WTB Verdict and Judge tyre, offered loooooads of predictable grip.

Can’t wait to get another ride in but it’ll probably be a week away

  • Glad you like the bike, I was thinking last weekend about how different a coil Helm would feel to my air-sprung one. What travel do you have yours at?

  • My Stif arrived today. Hoping to get a quick first ride in too later on (if work doesn't interfere).

  • 140mm

I haven’t any experience of air sprung Helms. In fact the last time I rode the same model fork with air and then coil was back in 2006 with old school Pikes, so not the freshest of memory.
You pay a bit in weigh running coils but when I was building the bike in my mind I didn’t think the small(ish) weight penalty was too much of a worry as this bike was never trying to be weight weenie. The heavyweight tyres make far more difference to getting the thing up hills.
The coils are just super smooth as I guess there’s less seals for stuff to pass through (deep tech knowledge I know).

  • I think it depends on how hard you ride really, if you're bottoming out an air fork or have a fair few tokens in then a short travel coil fork probably isn't for you.

Interestingly the 38 and Zeb coil conversions can be housed in a tube so they don't damage the insides of the stanchions so can be converted back to air should you so require.

  • I'm not bottoming my 150mm Helm out pissing about around the Surrey Hills.
