  • Lookin' fantastically good.

  • Awesome. Bars and tires look dope

  • This is looking top notch, making me so exited to get my build finished now. I read your comment a few weeks back about saddle, I’ve a fabric sport for sale if you wanted!

  • So good!

Everything sits so well on that frame. Can’t wait to hear how it rides.

  • I’ve a fabric sport for sale if you wanted!

    Fab, PM'd!

  • Looks wise it's honestly turning out waaaay better than I thought it would. Shakedown ride report to follow later this week!

  • Awesome! So glad you got this built up. Was gutted I didn’t have the time to put into it, but looks like you’ve done a much better job than the dad-mobile I had planned!

  • Decided to make the most of the benign weather and took it out for a shakedown spin around Greenwich Park.

It's heavy, incredibly twitchy, the seatpost slips and the bars are far too wide. I love it!

It is a silly, grin-inducing bike and it just baits you into riding like a kid again. The kenda small block tyres make an excellent noise on tarmac at speed; coming down Vanbrugh Hill at what felt like 150km/h it genuinely sounded like it was about to take off!

  • Also, no rear brake cable stop that I could find so botched it with a few zip ties.

  • Love this, glad it’s as fun to ride as it looks.

Have you tried rotating the bars forward for a bit of upsweep? This increased comfort on my similar #retromtblolbike

  • you should take it over some government provided skate obstacles, great build

  • Konas of that vintage had a weird proprietary plastic cable stop referred to as dog collar. Since it was made for cantis, it wouldn't have been of much use for a v-brake set-up. Top marks for the colour matched cable routing!

  • Yeah I need to play around with the handlebars, they're fine for a 20 min thrash round the park but you're probably right, need to max out that sweet upsweep.
#retromtblolbike needs to be a thing if it isn't already!

  • I was trying to get some air off the speed bumps at my local LTN to the dismay of a couple of dog walkers... how dare he try to have fun?!

  • Thanks! There was momentary regret when I ordered the cables, thought all-black might have been better but really pleased how it's turned out.
Had no idea about the dog collar thing, I'm sure there's some elegant clamp cable stop thing out there but I'll jump on any zip tie solution!

  • Looks like a proper fun ride.

Seatpost clamp not tightened properly or was it something else? found my rockhopper had a little slipping (though it could have been my fault)

Always been a bit unsure about coloured cable housing but the purple fits in perfectly here!

  • Seatpost clamp not tightened properly or was it something else?

Definitely a case of user error here, think the clamp needs a good clean and then maybe a bit of grip paste to be on the safe side.

  • Yeah a good clean and some grip paste couldn’t hurt.

You’re not using a shim by any chance? Was just doing a bit of Googling, think my error was me greasing the outside and in of the shim, where I only really needed to grease the outside.

  • No shim, luckily Brand-X do a 26.4 seatpost so I didn't need one.

  • Looks really fun. Great job on the build!

Your cable routing reminded me of a trick I learned years ago from Parry, my pal and ex Psyclewerx mechanic in Bristol. I didn’t bother to do up the tie, but you get the idea, just add a washer...

  • That’s genius haha!

  • Cheers, it really is great fun!

That little trick has blown my mind, the transformative power of a washer!

  • New seat clamp to see if it fixes the slipping seatpost issue. Bike is holding up well on the South Downs Way today!
