Yup, this is what I was thinking, but was thinking I'd avoid the adhesive part, as it could get in the way of application.
I could just leave it on of course, 1-4mm tape seems ideal.

Yes, nefarious is correct. There is a product which I use for backfilling gaps before silicon and it's called caulk saver.
