  • Being a gentleman of mild white-trash sensibilities I had to buy the Gravedigger the first time I saw it in my local supermarket.

Built it the same evening but I was disappointed by the huge front bumper, which Lego no doubt added to protect the axle from over-zealous pullback motor antics. I love the Gravediggers mad front end that hangs out like a jawless skull so I decided to do something about it.

I’ve got no stockpile of Lego, so I concluded that the quickest and cheapest option after a structural investigation, was to remove three holes from both of the main chassis pieces. After wrestling the offending parts free, a hacksaw and a file made quick work of the unwanted holes. The rough ends are hidden at the back when back in place, pleased with the result.

  • Grave Digger was always my favourite.

    Always went the extra mile...

  • NIce.

  • Buying from BrickLink - 2x2 plates in various colours. 2500 in total. Almost certainly one seller wont have them all. Any tips for buying? I assume this is the best place to buy.

  • As in, you want to buy 2,500 of them?

  • Presumably making some kind of mosaic.

  • I've never done it, but you may be able to do it via the 'Upload MOC' or 'Upload Inventory' at Bricklink / Rebrickable / BrickOwl. I think you can submit something and then 'rebrick' it, that is, get it to put together an order from the inventory list, with it automatically selecting vendors that have the parts. I have no idea if that's right, have just picked it up from on-line chatter I've come across, and I don't have a log-in for any of these sites so can't explain further. Perhaps someone else here has done it?

  • yes, for a mosaic - i will create an account and give that a go, thanks oliver

  • Athough 2500 = roughly £75

  • try lego's own bricks and pieces site first - have better quantities of standard parts, good prices and generally less faff than going to lots of different bricklink sellers

  • They seem to be more expensive at 7p each - I think I will have to pick up the bulk orders (I need 931 whites for example) at the cheapest unit price even if it is more hassle.

  • My in-laws are incredible hoarders

  • So good to have something like this.

  • Most excellent. I remember that generation of Lego with fondness. As a set it has less sophistication than today’s stuff but no less play value.... and it held together better!

  • Ah. Petrochemicals... #reminisce

  • and it held together better

Some bits maybe but the overall design isn't great. The shop hasn't got a lintel over the door for example which makes putting the roof plate on tricky as the door is only held on a single stud from the bottom until the roof is in place.

  • Never the same after Octan's hostile takeover.

  • Ha! That was a collectible from Shell garages partnered with Ferrari.

    I still have the set.

  • Really nice. Shame it’s out of stock everywhere.

  • Ha, no, but that is rather glorious!

  • One of the best sets of recent years. The wing mechanism is pretty simple, but a lot of fun:
