  • Not for Di2, but I drilled an extra hole in the headtube of my FS MTB to add a port for a dropper post. It already had 3 holes for cables though.

  • Thanks. I assume my bike has a JC41 down there linking the components.

There’s a tag on the cable protruding from the head tube telling me it’s 1200mm. I’ll give it a tug and see if I can make it reach the shifter.

  • Got an older external Di2 setup which now seems to discharge completely after a few hours. Any ideas why and moreover, how to diagnose? Shop with some connection wizardry, adding my wireless unit didn't work and the junction is EW79A so can't connect it to my own laptop?

  • EW79A implies it's the original 10 speed Dura Ace with big multicore connectors and hardwired cables that's completely incompatible with everything newer. Are you sure?

Unplug one thing at a time until the problem goes away. Replace that thing. Or unplug everything, see if the problem still occurs, then re-add things until it reappears.

  • EW67A! Oops.

  • Limit screws not touching are they? They'll drain the battery quick if they are.
Battery might be on its last legs, if a cell dies then it'll discharge quick too

  • Cheers, I'll give all these a go. Given the price of potentially replacing the battery I might as well go internal and try flogging the other bits individually on eBay.

  • Was thinking of an entry point at the front end, hopefully room for a junction box in DT with access from the BB (big if) and an internal battery in the seat tube. Then a hole near the bottom if the seat tube to supply the FD and an external run to the RD.

That's only hiding the cable run along the down tube, which you could easily cable tie to the rear brake hose. Use an SM-JC40 under the bottom bracket. Then it's only getting to the internal battery that's a problem.

  • Ok so I'm in the process of selecting the bits for my first foray into Di2 and have a couple of questions that I can't find ready answers for: What is the actual differences between the older SD50 wiring and the newer SD300 stuff? and in a similar vein does anyone have any more details on the newly released EW-JC304 internal junction B? It seems to be a bit slimmer than the older SN-JC41 but I can't find any exact measurements online

The reason I ask is that I want to fit it internally in the downtube of a steel frame but the vent hole is going to make it pretty tight. I roughly measured it at 15mm and apparently SM-JC41 is 14.5mm wide so if these new junction is smalled that would be better.

  • I'm in a very similar position as you except having a steel frame (with chainstay yoke) modified for Internal Di2. Just went round a framebuilder today and he will add a reinforcedhole at the top of the downtube, hole in the seat tube for FD cable exit and enlarge and existing drainage hole in the BB shell for RD cable exit. Internal junction B will either be in the seat tube or the downtube.

Did you consider the Ritchey logic-E headset that would allow you to bring the cable into the headtube without needing to drill a hole (if there is a vent hole opening inside)?

  • The 300 series has smaller plugs and skinnier cables. It's only for E-Bikes right now. The only adapter they offer takes a plug of each kind in each end, so it would be very messy to try to use it with a 1st gen groupset.

Di2 cables are pretty resilient to being cut and spliced/soldered if you want to route them through small holes.

  • You might want to check that all cables are in good nick. In my case the stem junction box => bottom bracket junction box had developed an intermittent fault (presumably due to bar bag rubbing & kinking it) and it wasn’t enough to kill the system altogether at first, but enough to make it appear as it was draining super fast (to this day I’m unsure whether it was that, or the charger not getting through, but I replaced that one cable and the problem went away)

  • I knew there were headset options out there but it all looked a bit complex. Either way, a guy was selling the same frame on ebay and kindly sent me a pic of the Bottom Bracket shell. Doesn't look like I could fit a Junction-B inside either the down tube or seat tube so unless there is a magic way to enlarge the holes, I'll probably not bother.

  • You only need to get the plugs through the holes.

Use extra long cables and route them all out the top of the seat tube, plug them in, then drop the junction B down.

  • Down where? It's not fitting through either of those holes.

Edit - down the top of the seat tube. Sorry, I'm a bit slow today.

  • I thought about that, but it's a lot of extra wires to fit in. My Strael has an extra long wire to the battery and it's a bit of a fiddle to get the seat post back in. The bottle mounts block the tube on the inside, I doubt that a junction B would fit past them.

  • This is my plan what I hope to do and then the junction box will probably end up sitting above where the top bottle boss enters the frame. Thanks for the answer on the SD300 cables!

  • I've got a few Di2 bits that I need to move on and bits I need for a(nother) new bike build.

Can you help supply either of the following?
Shimano Di2 EW-RS910 E-Tube Frame Bar Plug Mount
    Long wires....

    Ta!

Edit: Don't need - Shimano Di2 Wireless Unit (SM-EWWU111) - built in to EW-RS910 doh.

  • Gent and a scholar, I will try this now.

  • How did I not know the bar end box did Bluetooth despite owning one! (Which is now not even being used).

  • If you like data you can hook it up to a Garmin and then load the ride files into di2stats.net who'll analyse and provide shift maps etc.
Was all very helpful confirming (after I'd already purchased...) that my 1 X setup would be OK.

  • CRC / Wiggle description has had me. Ffs. Another £79.99 needs found. 😔

    Sorry Andy!

  • Likely not for a long time according to the rep I spoke to at last Interbike - they said it's not possible to do Di2 at the pricepoint they want to keep 105 at.

Also calling it now - 11 days from now Shimano will announce wireless Di2 12sp DA in celebration of their centennial.

  • does anyone know how Pro Tour teams attach their saddle mounted transmitters? I'm trying to find a neat way of attaching an external Di2 battery to my saddle/seatpost and currently it seems that trying to glue/screw a GoPro mount to the battery cage is the way to go - anyone got a better idea?
