whats the bartape on this?!
-
• #78
Oh yeah! I seen them before, pm me your detail so I can pay postage

Yeah I currently have some Fyxation Gates Slim Platform Pedals installed and really like the feel but black plastic is obviusly the wrong choice here. I am a big fan of the Hope F20s but they are also quite pricey. I have them on my eBay watchlist.

It's BLB SUPREME PRO WOVEN BAR TAPE - ARROW CANYON
And instead of the supplied black tape I finished it off with some Velox Cotton Handlebar Tape.

I had a handful of rides on this one now and it's real fun.
I did a sunrise ride to Richmond using it as a randonneur / road bike and its decently fast.
Then the other day I took it for some #NoGravel and that was lots of fun too. There are news on the pedal front. I got some Cube All mountain flats (see previous page) for real cheap. They need a bit of love and I hope I'll find some time for that soon. I am even considering to polish them.
And best thing I bought in ages: A Wizard Works Mini Shazam. Suits the bike so well and was already so useful on a few rides. This bag really makes the bike what I want it to be. A simple no bullshit grab your shit and get out bike.
I have a few different bikes and different kit, bags, tools, shoes etc. I sometimes tend to overthink getting out on a bike. This bike and bag combo is easy. I just throw some shit I need in the bag, wear whats comfortable and get on the bike.

This is super sweet, particularly the feeling it gives you to just get out and ride. I've got a Raleigh Randonneur that I think is near enough the same geo etc as this Royal, I'm tempted to make it similar to yours!

Very nice! Enjoyed reading through this thread.

First 2 pics are only missing chino short shorts. Great stuff, especially that it's getting you out riding.

wow. this thing bangs. I need something like this in my life for summer.
9/10, needs silver cranks for 10/10 ;)

Middleburn compact double with black chainrings would really set it off imo.
Silver chainrings on the current set could probably work well too -
• #87
Agreed, I grew to like mine a lot more with a silver ring. The standard shimano with the silver pinstripe and cut-outs are pretty bad, but the crank itself can look good

+baguette Afaik the Raleigh Randonneur and this model the Royal only differ in tubing. Without the alternations I had done to this frame you should be able to get 32c cyclocross tyres in yours. Maybe less maybe more. Raleigh clearances seem to differ a great deal over the years.
For cranks I am looking at the Velo Orange or SunXCD 50.4. I want supcompact gearing and they look great in my opinion. I just can't decide whether I want 46/30 or 44/28. The original idea was to get a decent top gear and a below 1:1 ratio on the smallest gear. I currently run a 11-32 9 speed cassette so I guess they would both tick the boxes. The current placeholder crankset is 46/36 and so far I have rarely used the 46-11 combo so maybe 44-11 is plenty enough for this bike.

Imo you'll be happier to have the low gear than the high gear when you really need it.

This is now officially one of my all-time favourite forum builds. With that new crankset it will look immensely awesome.

Fantastic - love this build.

Probably against the general thinking here but I have 42t 1x and what I really don't like it's how when I'm cruising at speed the chain it's about the smallest cog instead of running comfortably in the middle of the cassette. More chain wear, more friction, not a good place to spend many miles.

On a 1x system you should have a different chainline. Your front chainring basically sits between the large and small ring on a 2x. So my 44-11 should cross chain less than your 42-11 on a 1x setup.

I too am looking at the Sun xcd cranks, like the fact you can get a 110/74 BCD spider for them, TA rings in black with the shiny cranks, lovely!
Bike's looking fantastic, the WW bag is rather nice too. -
• #96
Yes I saw that but apparently these spiders are for triples. To run them 2x you would need to mount the 110mm ring on the middle position and have specific spacers for the 74mm ring.
I don't like the look of it so I'll go with 50.4 rings. -
• #97
Ah, that's put me off that now, that is a shame. I'll stick with 46/33 then, and just man up!
-
• #98
I agree, it's a shame. A good loking double with 110 /74 BCD would be amazing.
-
• #99
Yeah I agree, all I can see is a difference in tubing and original component spec. The tyre clearance seems the same as your Royal originally had, 32c and guards are squeezin with no room to spare.
Another question, what did you change the fork to? Your original has the same flat and thin crown as mine that leaves no space for anything (also annoying narrow canti stud width precluding all the canti mount front racks)

Two thing;
Grinding your gears isn’t the best plan of mice and men.
Chain length and derailleur choice are the biggest contributing factor.
well the hoods are a tatty, ones pink and ones yellow so would need swapping out personally.
i really couldnt ask money for them so cover postage and im happy :)
