Unintended N+1 - lightweight build Scott Addict SL

  • Recently picked up a SRAM red 10 speed groupset on eBay which I had no intention of putting on a new frame, then saw a good deal on a used Scott addict frame set with a weight of just over 1kg for frame and fork..

Now I’m looking at building a weight weenie project bike mainly from stock parts... not much progress but weighing of frame and looking for some 52/36 rings to replace the sram compact 110 BCD setup...

Frame is a 54 medium, should be able to get to 6.5kg with parts available!

    🍻

  • Looks great. I saw this come and go very quickly on eBay. Would have gone for it myself I think, but for the threaded BB. Have you thought about wheels?

  • Thanks @luft . It came up and I made an offer early on, seller was very helpful with detail and measurements. Threaded BB is my preferred zero hassle choice (yes full bore luddite), and the Red will fit straight on.

Wheel choice is giant slr 30mm which I intend to share with another bike (1350 grams?). Big gains to be had there but I’m trying to keep the build cheap! It was previously built up with Lightweight wheels, which I could not justify the cost of.

I could lose 2kg from my own rig so I’ll concentrate on that first 🤣

  • Very nice!
I guess my Scott Addict RC would get to that weight with the paint stripped off too!

Mines on 11s etap, with Lightweight clinchers and it came to 6kg, so 6.5kg is very doable!

  • Excellent project, here is mine Addict SL with Force 10spd..Mine was about 7kg without trying or any specific lightweight parts..did ride great

  • Looks very purposeful! What wheels are they?

Starting to see how much of a following these frames have, lightweight is much easier when the frameset is 3-500g less than most!

  • Wheels were Prime RP 38. Weight was about the same as your Giant wheels. You can easily go lighter, but I liked the mid depth just for aesthetics. Looking forward to see yours build.

  • Yes the paint removal idea I saw first here, loved the detail under the paint -

To get a paint removal and lacquer must’ve cost as much as I paid for the frameset..

Yours sounded like a dream build! Will be running mechanical 10, not sure how the weights compare of the sram groupsets though..

What bars/stem do you use? Was thinking of having it flexible in this area as I guess the frame is very stiff, is that right?

  • Who needs flexible bars, Addicts should be thrashed, particularly up hills!

So to that end, I have a Zipp SL Sprint carbon stem in 130mm and 38cm Deda Carbon Superzero bars.
Chainset is going to be changed to an Rotor Aldhu inspider 53/39.

  • You short people with your fancy light frames. Much envy!

  • @Acliff I've got the exact jersey to go with this. Haven't used it in years but it would go perfectly with this colour scheme.

  • Yes excellent - just saw your build on the thread, very tidy. Yours will be smaller :) but similar thought process!

Picked up some 52/36 rings 110 BCD from LBS, - plus cables etc - as I’m not quite ready for compact. Rings are TA, look really nice quality for the money 💰

  • Silver rings? Interesting choice!
I have a Rival 10 speed group set in silver that would look good on, but unsure about red 10.

  • Yes it’s not the regular choice, I use Campagnolo on other bikes and like the look 👀

  • Brief update.

Thrown some parts on for a sizing check.

Planet X brakes on, some of the sram parts. Bars and stem are set to change.

Found some red 11 chainrings on a 110 bcd to fit on the cranks which I’m pleased with for the money.

Bit concerned about front end height, the fork is cut pretty much as low as it will go...

Nice weather round the corner is giving me a push to complete now!

  • Front end looks correct to me! Excess steerer is excess weight of course...

  • Yes, I agree it looks right! It’s a case of possibly removing a few ribs to get the fit right 🤦‍♂️

More weight saved though I suppose!!

  • @Acliff I see yours is slammed and low like your other bikes 😎

That would be easy sub 6kg with a few tweaks, those wheels are very classy

  • Always loved the look of those 11sp Red Chainsets! Not usually into straight road builds but that gloss carbon finish in the frame looks SO GOOD! Can’t wait to see this finished

  • Thanks Laser! It’s a 10 speed chainset with 11 speed rings 😎

Can’t take credit for the finish but I’ll try and do the rest justice with the build... just working on my flexibility now! 🤣

  • The tan walls have already contributed lol! You won’t need to be flexible if you’re just sprinting up every climbing in the big ring 😂

  • A little progress!
Almost ready to blast up any hill in the big ring 🤣

My knees couldn’t cope with that!

Got a gold (?) chain to go on, along with red ferrules and black bar tape. Don’t want to go overboard on the bling, it’s a bike to be used (in mainly dry weather 🤣)

  • You mean sub 5 with a few tweaks.
    Already under sub 6 :)

  • How long before 1x and chopped down bars lol?

  • now let's talk about that corrado...
