Tried to do a bit of off the cuff recording straight into Logic yesterday, man I just can’t get on with software amps. Dunno what it is about them but as soon as I’m plugged into an amp sim, any semblance of touch and dynamics in my playing disappears and I end up bashing the crap out of my guitar and losing all feel. Are any of them any good?

I've struggled with them a bit in the past. But then I haven't really tried to resolve it, I've just not been as happy with what I was hearing and gone back to the amp's cab sim out. I think it might be a case of finding the right model / settings.
Though for me the Iridium sounds immediately better and "right" where the software plugs didn't. As I said - I'm lazy.

That looks great and surprisingly compact.

lazy man here too. What's Iridium?

The Strymon Iridium pedal. It’s a set of amp / cab / IR sims in a pedal enclosure. You have a Deluxe Reverb, an AC30 and a plexi / super lead. You can load your own IRs and whatnot.
Edit: reading down the product page they claim the analogue JFET preamp stage gives it better touch sensitivity - I dunno if this is true but it does sound and feel more natural/“real” to me straight off the bat than other things I’ve tried. But bear in mind I really am very lazy with tweaking these kinds of things.

My main amp & bass are down stairs in the lounge, my working space is upstairs - everyone needs a little 4-string next to their desk for work time noodling right? Right?
My guitars and amps are right next to my desk at home. WFH since C19 has done wonders for my playing :)

Seems like the right thing to do!
This is getting me at the moment, maybe I can find a cheap used Squier Mustang & mod it...

touch and dynamics
Have you tried using an amp sim that's front loaded? Something like the UAD Apollo range or the that Iridium pedal where the latency is practically zero?
I'm no great shakes as a player but even I felt that the small amount of latency introduced by software amp sims made it difficult to sync in with the rhythm of what was being played. Even if they sound great, they feel spongey.

Latency was what I thought as well. I can’t record using the GarageBand amp sims because of the latency - instead I have to monitor the input guitar signal as I’m recording, and apply the amp models afterwards.

So there's a podcast and group on Facebook called Guitar Nerds and three of the podcast hosts are currently starting build projects to modify Squier Broncos.
A number of members of the group on Facebook have bought them too to join in on the fun and the idea is to go nuts on building weird and excellent modified Broncos without it costing the earth!
One of the hosts actually uses a Bronco as her main bass already and she's heavily modified it with a rough natural finish, Hipshot lollipop tuners and a Serek B90 pickup.
They're cheap as chips basses (£159 from GAK at the moment) and it's going to be a lot of fun watching everyone else's builds progressing too so might be something that would suit your short scale bass aspirations?

If I could be spendy I'd definitely pick up an iridium, would sort my "straight to disc" issues. Been threatening a sansamp for years but always end up putting it 2nd in the queue mainly because I get distracted by crazy sounds first.

Looks fun! I'll check out the podcast

It's a great podcast and the group on Facebook is good if you're a massive guitar nerd!

Do you ever use your Yamaha amp to record direct into your daw? I do this and feel it’s a happy medium.
You have much better control of all the amps and effects when controlling it through your desktop also.

I know right, the fun stuff always comes first...
So far (and I’ve hardly tested it yet) the Iridium seems to sound better than the cab sim out of my valve amp. Different though. Way more flexible for just headphone playing.

Hi all. I bought this a couple of years ago as a US Fender Tele. Took the pickguard off for the first time today for a good clean and was surprised to find it’s routed for a humbucker. Does anyone know what this body is?

Same here man! I've only been caught out forgetting to mute once. Last week in a particularly dry board meeting i picked up an open tuned acoustic and started to play a bit of slide and some one on the call commented as an aside "i got them Scope Management Board blues..." which is what made me realise i'd been rumbled. I quickly muted myself and did a big cringe while a couple of people speculated who it was. Annoyingly someone else said, "I bet it was Fatberg, he looks like the type". I just laughed and changed the subject back to business but was well and truly busted.

70's had the neck himbuckers, but you got routing for a middle single coil too so it's not that.
-
• #10871
That is routing for a middle single coil, although my bad pictures don't show it very well. So what's the model you mentioned?

Thanks for the DI tips. Will do some research. Have never tried using the Yamahahaha to be honest as it lives downstairs by the telly. Worth a go.
Also intrigued by the Bronco bass bargain. I have a Squier jazz natural walnut bass but i don't dig it at all. Would far rather have a P-bass sized neck. Or something else shortscale. Sold my Dano shortscale to to @not4sale last year so if i flog that Jazz i'd need something cheap and cheerful for recording. What's the nut width like on those little broncos?

Telecaster Custom = neck HB, bridge single, Tele headstock
Telecaster Deluxe = twin HB, Strat headstock (usually)
-
• #10874
For sure, and I've had a Custom. Sunburst too. Just concerned that this may be a Mexican body. No real issue with that other than I bought and paid for a US Tele.
-

I wonder if it might have been Micawbered and returned to stock before being sold?
There are so few three-pickup Tele models and even fewer that have a regular single coil bridge.
Guitar rack is great! Expansion thingies are very cool, lots of room for six electrics... Bad news is I really need to paint this room but I really can't be fucked... There goes the weekend!!
