In new arrivals for me I just received the latest from Ryan Laukat maker of 'Near & Far' & 'Above & Below', this one is called sleeping gods and it's an adventure book driven game where you control the 9 crew members of a ship which finds itself in uncharted waters tasked with trying to awaken the sleeping gods where all others chosen before you have failed, but something out there doesn't want you to do so and will pop up to stop you from time to time. not to mention the various dangers in these treacherous waters trying to put an end to you.
Game has a tiny bit of worker placement, resource management and exploration through an atlas book with maps of the regions you are exploring that link to choose-your-own adventure style entries in the story book which are governed by the acquisition of quests and keywords. there's also a combat mechanic for when you run into trouble.
It's designed to be tough to play and you wont see close to anything in a single playthrough as there's a built in timer in the event deck but as you unlock stuff and explore the map you make notes for the next run so each time you can set off exploring without doing the same 20 things first to begin the adventure on the starting map.
Scoring is based on how many things you achieve in a run so it's points based but i think it's only there for people who absolutely must be graded on everything, the gameplay is uncovering the story first and foremost.
has had a bit of a hype built as the kickstarter copies have arrived but it'll be coming to retail once all the KS orders are fulfilled.
I've played 1/3rd of a playthrough to get the feel of the game so far and now I'm starting over as I kind of dragged my feet on the exploration and probably didnt get off to the best start first time around. but so far it's an 8/10 for me.
only real downer is how much table space it takes up & the more quests and items you get the more space you need.
