Thanks, will take a look! Maybe should have said this first, but the idea is to get something super easy to do for newbs (which I consider myself to be). Trying to find something to replace zoom pub quizzes (uuughhhh).

Got this for my birthday from a couple of mates. Shame we can’t play it! When I’ve got some spare time, I’m going to give the 1-player a go. Looks pretty good though.

I just picked up all the expansions (that are still in print) for it over christmas, it's very good.
Lord of the Rings: Journeys in middle earth is very similar as it's also from FFG. also good.

Does anyone have the Dark Souls board game they wish to move on to a new home?

I don't have Facebook, will see if the Ministry of Home Affairs still uses it.
Thanks for the find! -

I should really re-title this 'The Beardgames Thread'.

Has anyone played Scythe?
Pre lockdown nightmares I got to playing it off and on with a group of mates pretty casually. But interest tailed off from all but two of us. It does surprisingly well as a two player.I really enjoy that the mechanics make what appears complex actually play simply. There's a fluidity to it I really like, so I have picked up the computer version to see if its as fun.

I always wondered what those vast factory estates around Basildon were for*.
It's clear, they were working on the necessary technology to clone bearded boardgame-playing cyclists.
[* I used to sell to Yardley, bitd, '84-'90]. -

I lived on the estate (noak bridge) just on the other side of the A127 to yardleys. there's a chance you saw me causing mischief in that strip of waste land opposite at the tail end of your tenure.

Which expansion pack for Settlers of Catan should I buy? Table space is a bit at a premium if that is a factor.
-
• #643
I’d get another game that takes up less space instead then. Suggestions: Camel Up, Mysterium Park, Diamanté, The Mind, Whitehall Mystery, Yogi are all good.

As long as you weren't contemplating fucking about
with the tyres of red F-reg Cavalier you're good.I presume the Yardley factory/office block is long gone?

What causes the need for extra space are mainly the six-player expansion packs. The expansion that adds the most to the game is Cities and Knights. You can expand everything for six players later.

Star Realms is a two player card game which is ridiculously good. So good in fact that I downloaded the app to keep playing it as much as possible.

I've been playing the solo campaign for Hero Realms lately to get it off my shelf of shame and it's great fun but these kind of deck-builders where you accumulate all kinds of points from all over the place on each turn work so much better when the app does the counting for you. The bookkeeping just makes it less of a game to pick up whenever you fancy a quick game and more one you only look at when you're still feeling a bit mentally alert. the star realms app I can sit and play mindlessly any time, the solo challenges were my go-to for the london-brighton train journey back in the before times.
Some games just work better with something tracking things for you, slay the spire video game is just a card game but all the little accounting it does when you play cards tracking health points, status, energy etc would be mind numbingly tedious playing in real life. It's why even though it looks gorgeous I swerved the recent darkest dungeon kickstarter, there's no cards in that one but so many moving parts I can't see how it doesn't crawl when played in a physical medium.

Yeah totally, even just eliminating the regular shuffling means the Star Realms app is my go to now (even if it's terribly designed in some places).

In new arrivals for me I just received the latest from Ryan Laukat maker of 'Near & Far' & 'Above & Below', this one is called sleeping gods and it's an adventure book driven game where you control the 9 crew members of a ship which finds itself in uncharted waters tasked with trying to awaken the sleeping gods where all others chosen before you have failed, but something out there doesn't want you to do so and will pop up to stop you from time to time. not to mention the various dangers in these treacherous waters trying to put an end to you.
Game has a tiny bit of worker placement, resource management and exploration through an atlas book with maps of the regions you are exploring that link to choose-your-own adventure style entries in the story book which are governed by the acquisition of quests and keywords. there's also a combat mechanic for when you run into trouble.
It's designed to be tough to play and you wont see close to anything in a single playthrough as there's a built in timer in the event deck but as you unlock stuff and explore the map you make notes for the next run so each time you can set off exploring without doing the same 20 things first to begin the adventure on the starting map.
Scoring is based on how many things you achieve in a run so it's points based but i think it's only there for people who absolutely must be graded on everything, the gameplay is uncovering the story first and foremost.
has had a bit of a hype built as the kickstarter copies have arrived but it'll be coming to retail once all the KS orders are fulfilled.
I've played 1/3rd of a playthrough to get the feel of the game so far and now I'm starting over as I kind of dragged my feet on the exploration and probably didnt get off to the best start first time around. but so far it's an 8/10 for me.
only real downer is how much table space it takes up & the more quests and items you get the more space you need.

Also arriving in the post any day now is what is billed as a Point & Click adventure boardgame (think monkey island, day of the tentacle etc) which is either going to be amazing or terrible. for £20 I figured I'd take a punt.
If anyone's looking for a slowburner, Mansions of Madness is very good.
