If the width of the mudguard is 35mm, then maximum 35mm, the wheel flex will increase the likelihood of tyres rubbing on the stay, and if your bike is still under warranty, likely to be voided if there’s erosion.
Cool, neat way of thinking about it I’ve been pondering making up a template etc not realising my mudguards are already a 35mm template.
Minimum 2mm gap between tyres and stay, recommend 4mm gap.
